  • I feel terrible about wasting food and try not to, but sometimes it is so difficult. Any leftover bits of meat I give to the dog, and veg goes into compost but the thing that drives me NUTS is the yoghurts. I buy them because the kids want them and then they end up going off. I have 4 left in the fridge at the moment and will try and eat them over the next few days and then I am not buying any more!

I make leftover stale bread into crumbs and freeze them mixed with a bit of parmesan cheese - they are able to be used straight from the freezer and make a nice topping on macaroni cheese, pasta bake etc or as a coating for chicken - it's called Chicken Romanoff I think and tastes lovely! I even froze half of DD1's birthday cake the other day because I knew that it was too much for us to use up!

At the moment I am trying to see how long I can go without going to the supermarket - so far I have done 9 days - I have been buying fresh fruit from the greengrocers and am going to try and use up everything in the cupboards - not even buying bread but using the many bread mixes I have bought over the last year and not used! I have a supply of UHT milk so won't even have to go to buy that.

My Mum NEVER wasted food but I am afraid that I had become really blase about chucking stuff out and am really trying to stop.

There's no need to feel guilty, because there's a thread where other Old Stylers will come up with a use for most things that are headed for the bin (unless they're completely past it).

Leftovers? Use it up! Don't throw it in the bin!

I'll add this thread to that one tomorrow to keep the suggestions together.

    I just don't waste food.

From a moral point of view, I refuse to do so, whilst there are still people in the world suffering and dying from the lack of it.

From a more pratical point of view I simply can't afford to.
The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)

    I do waste some:o:o

Its terrible while so much of the world is hungery:o:o

I feel much more guilty if I waste meat. If something has died to be on your plate, its a sin to waste it.

I don`t waste food. Not ever. I sometimes buy too much veg but any spare veg is turned into soup. No need to waste food if cooking from scratch eg I made 1 litre of yog the other day and its a lot so I will turn some into ice cream today

Just pop those yoghurts in the freezer, in their pots. My kids used to do this because they liked them frozen. You could even stick a lolly stick in the top before you freeze them.

If yoghurt is seriously near the end of its life, just make a really simple yoghourt cake, that can then go into the freezer.

..I had to chuck the best part of a full fridge of salad and other fresh items the other day. Between doing the big shop and eating it, I found out I was pregnant, morning sickness kicked in and I couldn't touch any of it!!
  • I feel guilty too when I waste food so try very hard not to. The leftover thread mentioned earlier is very good.

Thanks for the replies and ideas! I will visit the leftovers thread.

I really try hard not to waste food and almost never do, I do meal plans and everything. But we are going away this weekend and I literally have too much food, we will not be able to eat it all in time unless we overeat - and I am trying to lose weight!

I made a big batch of veg soup yesterday for lunches all week - can't even put any in the freezer till I take something out (but I have enough fresh stuff to do us all week so pointless taking anything out). Argh. OH cooks some evenings as well and will always buy fresh stuff even if we have food in the house. Double argh.

p.s. Actiongirl, congrats on the pregnancy!
