  • Added to 6 (cut up) sausages - leftover wine, leftover gravy, lentils, wrinkly tomates, limp rocket, limp leeks. Result - sausage and lentil casserole, 5 decent portions

Eaten with a pile of slightly green potatoes turned into mash

    Afters - jam tarts

Also made - quiche with end of a piece of cheese and some greek yog mixed in
    - apple pie with cinnamon and sugar to disguise the fact that apples are past their best.

I do like the challenge of leftover day. It takes a long time to put it all together but I feel much better for not throwing things away

I'm new to this thread so hello all :hello:
As this seems to be about thriftyness, I thought you might like to join in by adding things that you can do with foodstuffs that normally get thrown away!!!

    To start:

    1) Tuna in oil - normally you drain the oil and throw away, but you can use it to fry veggies etc for a fish stew or stir fry.

    2) Potato peelings - deep fry in hot oil for delicious hand cooked chips/crisps

    3) Poultry carcus - boil up for nice basis for soup or stock

    4) Coffee grinds - I've heard these are good for mixing with compost for planting

    5) Tea leaves - as no 4 above (well so my mum tells me)

    6) Egg shells - good for putting near plants to keep the slugs away

What other foodstuffs that get thrown away does anyone have uses for ???
    I'm a nutter :j

    Hi skintandsad

Some good ideas there. We have a current thread that may interest you.

Leftovers? Use it up! Don't throw it in the bin!

I'll add your post to it later to keep the suggestions together.

i've also heard that if you're going away for a few days, you can place your used teabags at the base of your houseplants, they will help to keep them moist so you won't have to ask a neighbour to pop in and water them for you.

Banana skins - chop them up and place around the base of your roses. Your roses will love them as the nutrients from the skins degrade into the soil.

Just a reminder that rice or flour weevils arrived as eggs in the rice or flour when you bught it. They are not due to any lack of food hygeine on your part. Putting the rice or flour in the freezer should kill them off, though.

  • i heard on the radio that you can put coffee grinds around your seedlings to stop the slugs from eating them (the seedlings). Apparently the coffee makes them whizz around because the produce too much slime so they scarper quickly!
  • Hi can anyone help me?

Our local shop is very good at giving away goods that are past their use by date away at 10p per item. I have had some great finds in their reductions box, most of which I manage to use.

However, I got three bars of brazil nut toffee a while back, the toffee is really hard and I do not want to break my teeth eating it!

So was thinking of perhaps making a flapjack type thing with the toffee, does anyone have a suitable recipe for making flapjacks this way rather from scratch?

Or does anyone have another suggestions of what I can use the toffee for?

    Thanks in advance :D
