Goodness I had forgotten about this thread! Tonight we had hm ham and pineapple pizza, so have some pineapple over, which will be turned into pineapple sponge pud tomorrow.

Some of our milk is past it's best so should be just right for making scones with, which will mean we can use up the last of the hm blackberry preserve.

We still have "bottom of the fridge soup" to use up all the leftover veg on the night before the next fruit and veg box is delivered. Still have a freezer fairy as well!;)

I try to look in the fridge every evening after doing the dishes to see what needs to be used up and plan meals from that. I got that tip from the Tightwad Gazette.
Our days are happier when we give people a bit of our heart rather than a piece of our mind.

  • came home from my craft class with 8 sausage rolls ten small cocktail sausages a hardly touched box of dips, one person had some out of there and half a packet of cheese straws, there was also a big bowl of carrots in sticks going to waste.I took them all round to my DD and she stuck them in the fridge .Tomorrow the boys will have some carrot sticks in their packed lunch plus some sausage rolls and cheese sticks Cocktail sausages will be sliced in half and fried up for breakfast.Nothing has gone to waste, it will all be used up.It was going to be dumped in the WPB !! buy I rescued it.
I shall be soup making tomorrow as I have some limp looking celery and quite a lot of potato's to sort out.a handful of frozen leeks and a couple of garlic cloves and three litres of soup for almost nothing
  • I freeze crusts of bread, rolls and croissants etc. When I have enough I'll make a bread pudding. I'll look in the cupboard and find marmarlade/jam that's nearly finished. A few nuts left and ripe fruit ie mango, banana, apples, dried cranberries etc, just add them to the mixture and wow what a fantastic moist bread pudding.

Also, if I have a pepper left in the fridge before I go on holiday, I put it in the freezer whole and use it in a goulash or chilli when I come home. Same with tomatoes.
  • Often cook mince and will serve 2/3 of it one night (say with mashed potato), and the second night add a tin of tomatoes and a tin of kidney beans, and some chilli powder = chilli con carne (with rice). Sometimes I add some extra vegetables instead, plus tin of tomatoes and serve with spaghetti.

If I make the chilli dish, I keep a couple of tablespoons of beans back and then add those to a vegetable soup the next day to thicken it up.

We get at least 3 meals out of a chicken (there are only 2 of us) sometimes 4. I always cut off the legs and freeze those (for a future meal) before cooking the chicken. Roast chicken meal one day and then use leftovers for soup or stew or curry the next. If anything left on the carcass (depending on size of the chicken) use it to make a stock.

And, yes, like lots of others on this thread, I have my "cream of fridge" soup on a regular basis. Very little gets thrown away.

    Great thread!

We often have a Lamb Hotpot and there is usually plenty of gravy and some spare vegetables left in the bottom of the caserole. I freeze it and use it as a tasty base for the next Scotch Broth I make using meat bones given to us by our butcher.
  • I don't have many leftovers cos I plan quite strictly but old bananas go into a cake, any veg left gets made into a stew, and bits of bread i grate into breadcrumbs and freeze for when needed.

my bedsheet got a hole in the middle so i cut down the middle and sewed t back up the other way round - now the middle bit is intact and the holey bits are on the outside, thye get tucked under the mattress so i don't see them :)

  • hi some nice tips there,I found about old 3 plums and a couple of red apples which were horrible to eat so I chopped them up and stewed with a little sugar and served it with some custard and it was delicious and cheap

Hi, I have been reading the os threads for months now and have finally got up the courage to post myself.

I freeze leftover stew /casseroles in one or two portions. I can then defrost and make a pie or cobbler with a scone topping which will stretch to three or four of us. Or have an instant ready meal if we aren't all at home.

Any veg that happens to be in the fridge goes into soup with the pulse soup mix. Sometimes left overs from that get whizzed up and used as stock for a stew or sausage casserole.

Any rice, veg and pulses left are turned into soup, bits of leftover cheese go into cheese sauces, bread bits go into a freezer bag for Christmas dinner stuffing.
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

Grate cheese when you get it. Put in freezer in resealable bag. You can use it straight from frozen in sauces or toasties etc. so it doesn't have chance to go off.

I keep bread in the freezer as well and just take out the slices we need them.
