I work on the principle that what ever is left is put in a bag and goes in the freezer. Ok somethings don't work, but as it was leftover it would probably have been thrown out anyway. I always double up when cooking rice, and mashed potatoes/veg. Mixed veg mash is lovely - especially with a nice knob of proper butter.

Quarter them and freeze. When you have time you can add to some grapefruit and/or lemons and make marmalade.

Slice and freeze flat on a tray before bagging. Useful to add to drinks in the summer.

Put sugar and a little water in a pan. Heat without stirring to make thin caramel. Slice oranges and marinade in it. Makes a lovely sharp desert. Can be frozen.

Use the juice and a little rind of one to flavour a simple all in one cake.

I'll come back if I think of any more.

I have used ready to roll icing to cover a christmas cake. Any idea what to do with the left over icing bits that were trimmed off.

I used the leftover marzipan by rolling it in balls and covering it in chocolate, but didn't think it would work with icing.

    Any suggestions.
    thanks in advance

I started do do this a while ago and have becaome v lazy lately so am going to do better! I cooked up some sausage for the family last night and had some peppers and cherry toms that were going soft so i roasted them in olive oil. cooked some rice with carrots and peas and added sliced sausage to it. Mu hubby had that with the roast veg and the boys had it without the veg, my10 mth old had it chopped up in gravy and devoured it!Ialso made bread so the last two sausages would do for hubby at work. otherwise he wouldn't have got around to eating them and they'd have gone off!

Just one question, i eat bubble and squesk alot and eat too much at once as i always make a big batch, does anyone know if it can be frozen?Didn't know how well it would fry up crispy after defrosting? Thanks

This Thread is great, even more determined that I won't throw any food out before I have explored all possibilities. The other day I had half a carton of Soured Cream left which would normally have been thrown out, searched around on the Forums here and found a nice recipe for Soda Bread, had never made it before, it was so easy and very tasty and made even better by the fact that it was made using something that would have been wasted. Starting the New Year as I mean to go on.;)

Thanks to everyone for all the good ideas.

    Hi dobs,

Like you I always make too much bubble and squeak. I freeze it 'raw'as it were. I have frozen it after frying and then reheated it, but that did not work well.

Well yesterday I used the last of the ham that I cooked on Christmas Eve - it went into a ham/cream/cheese sauce on pasta!

Night before that I used up the rest of Christmas turkey in a curry.
