hahaha i though about doing that tonight i bought tall glass jars and when putting the lentils in:rolleyes: thought about putting them in the other jar mixed up! will try the crumble idea and also some crispie cakes and then hopefully there shouldnt be all that much left to mix in!!

this thread is fantastic went and bought shopping today and it cost nothing compared to what i normally spend, £50 for 2 adults and 4 children:j that included a few luxuries and a bottle of champagne for tom as its our wedding anniversary oh and 8 tins for OH over the weekend. my food bill has never been so low and my bucket has never been so empty!! thanks to all:T

I was peeling the taiters today when I had a  ...I washed off the peelings & laid them onto the baking tray, then tonight I sprayed them with a little oil & sprinkling of salt, hot oven for 10-15mins & something resembling posh crisps was born :p

Thanks for the advice about veg peelings--I've started a stock bag! Must remember to tell people about it tho, or it will disappear in the bin....

  • I'm off on hols on Monday (hurrah) so have been having a using up frenzy this evening. Just sauteed off the remaining courgettes from my garden which I will freeze in portions to be added to bolognese, ratatouille etc. I've also just made some Baileys Fudge which has used up some leftover condensed milk, dregs of Baileys and some Tesco Value dark chocolate. It looks delicious and was so easy to make.

Tomorrow's dinner will be a pasta bake to use up the remaining onion and pepper and that'll be us done. Any fruit still in the bowl can come with us for snacks.

well the food things has been going well but have had a mishap?? made 3 pots of soup on thurs to use up all the veg that was looking a bit sorry for itself, froze one pot in tubs for quick easy meals for baby and other 2 pots were for dinner and lunches until used. well i wasnt paying attention and burnt the lentil and bacon, not only that when trying to take off the cooker i dropped it and it went everywhere?? the other pot of veg broth went down a treat but am kicking myself about the wasted pot??

used all the bits and pieces in fridge and made a spaghetti carbonara type thing using up the cream, cheeses and cookng bacon tonight and i muct admit for it being thrown together it was rather good:D

  • Hi everyone
has anyone any quick and simple recipes for dips. I not only don't want to pay the prices in the stores but would prefer to know exactly what is going in to them. (no additives) Was hoping to use up some creme fraiche.

My favourite and easiest is add some curry paste and mint sauce to creme fraiche to make up a nice curry dip. the mint cools the curry obviously!

Other one is a barbeque one; finely chop a green pepper into some creme fraiche, add a little mayo, tomato ketchup and worcestershire sauce to taste and then stir in soem finely grated cheddar
  • Hiya, nosying in on this thread :) I've been making a real effort lately not to waste any food and its amzing how much we were wasting before i'm ashamed to say :o Going to read back through this thread for more ideas.

Tonights tea is sausages and onion gravy in yorkshire puds and am going to make bubble and squeak using up the veg i have before buying more, 4 large potatoes to mash, mixed with carrots and savoy cabbage, shaped into cakes and fried until golden. At one point i'd have thrown the odds and end of veg away :o

Looking forward to more ideas :)

Confession time ! Found something nasty, overflowed and sticky in my food cupboard today. Had to remove everything for a good cleanout. Ashamed to say that I found over a dozen jars/tins/sauce bottles badly out of date and several jars of the same item half used growing penicillin! My beloved OH does most of the shopping these days (his choice - he enjoys it!) but he can't resist trailing up and down the aisles for interesting looking products which are used once, stuffed in the cupboard and lost to posterity in the ensuing muddle! I lined all the waste stuff up on the kitchen worktop, and counted up the cost as it was thrown down the sink or tossed into the bin and uttered stern words about the starving people in Africa and the Credit Crunch. Between now and Christmas we are now going to try and live off the storecupboard /freezer/vegetable patch. Perhaps I should start the equivalent of a Swear Box for every item we buy going forward, from a shop!

Just a wee idea that some might find useful -

I keep a tub in my freezer that all the stock-worthy scraps go into - carrot peelings, onion tops and scraps, parsley stalks, cabbage offcuts, etc. When it's full, it goes into the slow cooker overnight. Strained off in the morning - free veggy stock!

Haven't been in here for a while, but I do this, except I don't make it for stock, I make soup, and it is so tasty. I'll blend it up too for the roughage and I honestly can't tell the difference.
Getting there... A deal at a time. :T
