years ago a friend of mine's brother who was a doctor told me that wilting celery was a carcinogen, like stale peanuts. I don't know whether this is true or not (does anyone on here know?) but I try and use it before it goes really bendy. At most I would keep it in the fridge for about 10 days.

I use celery in loads of things though - I even use the leaves as they have a lovely flavour. I put it in bolognaise, chilli, scouse, braised steak, hotpot, tuna concoction (tuna, diced spring onion, diced celery, diced cucumber, chopped hard boiled eggs, chopped tomatoes - all mixed up with a bit of salad cream), welsh rarebit and other stuff which I can't think of ATM.

  • trim a tiny slice off the base. Put it in a glass of iced water, hey presto, non bendy LOL. Soups, stews, salads all good for celery. Thought of chilled soups whilst it's sunny?

We had a quiz night at school & it included a ploughmans. I bought all the leftover bread home, made it into bread pudding & took it back to school where it all got eaten, so no waste there.

If you don't fancy eating the celery & have youngsters around, put some food colouring in the water. It's amazing to watch the colour seep up the stalk!

    Ok.......I know......simple things=simple minds, but at least I'm easily pleased:p

I used to be horrible about cooking too much rice or pasta and not knowing what to do with the leftovers. I still cook to much nearly everytime but what I do now is put the cooked pasta in some cold water and pop in the fridge to be turned into a yummy pasta salad for lunches or tea, I do the same with the rice. No more waste here with them and the DOH loves having cold salads for lunch instead of sarnies!

Hope this helps a little bit :j

I always seem to cook twice as much as we need when I'm doing rice! Now I freeze the other half, means that next time i actually have the right amount :D . Sometimes I do use mine up for salads, kids love rice and pasta salads in their lunch boxes, also if I leave a huge bowl in the fridge they can help themselves instead of keep telling me they're hungry  At least I know that they're snacking on something healthy!

Ugh no - mum used to make that continually in summer when we were young - all that soggy white bread - no ta!! :o (And yet I like hot bread and butter pudding and bread pudding :o)

    ;)

:) I'm exactly the same - love bread and butter pudding but really can't stand summer pudding at all - perhaps because b&b pud is a hot, cooked pudding?
