Right, so the garage have called back (already), to say its fixed and ready to collect. Apparently all they have done is reset the light. They are saying there is no contamination in the oil. Job done.

No explanation as to why the oil is black and full of particulate (never seen new oil that colour before!).

So, what do we reckon? Accept the car back, or refuse it?

Go down, there, pull the dipstick out, ask them to explain why the new oil is black and full of soot?

Forgetting to reset the light is a common mistake that dealers make though. Mine showed me how to do it myself on the Mondeo, though I've since forgotten, basically was like entering a cheat code on a games console.

My husband has called Ford Customer relationships back (who he spoke to earlier), to outline our concerns. They are calling the garage to ask them to at least drain, flush, and refill with new oil before returning it, so that we can check it from "new" and have something to measure against to see if it turns black and the level increases again.

Maybe i'm a bit simple, but if they "forgot" to reset the light at the service, then why did it take 2.5 weeks to come on? Why suddenly now?
The place is about 45 minutes away, but i guess we could go and see them when we collect the car.

On my Mondeo that light isn't triggered by any sort of oil quality sensor. It just comes on at set intervals regardless of what you do with your oil.

I usually tend to book the service slightly in advance of reaching the mileage limit as I get in a lot of trouble from work if I'm overdue a service, so when it goes in often the light hasn't come on yet.

No oil change light = tech doesn't bother to reset it. Then in a few hundred miles time on comes the light.

Get down there and take a sample, let them see you doing it, a few drops from the dipstick a few times in to a small container.
Exactly what light on the dash was on and what does the handbook say that light was, resetting it might be a huge mistake on top of the other mistakes.
NOTE : do not use this garage again, they are thoroughly incompetent .

Hmmmm. well this isnt the oil service light. Its separate - Fuel in Oil light. Plus, the first oil service/change for this engine is due by 12,500miles, and i'm now at about 9,500. So the light should not have come on so soon.

Vax, it is an amber oil lamp symbol with a wavy line underneath. On the opposite side of the display from the oil lamp with a few drops symbol. The manual says it this symbol is "Fuel in Oil " "It will illuminate when the engine oil has been diluted with fuel. Have the engine oil changed as soon as possible".

Both the dealership and Ford are refusing to change the oil.

I am going to err on the side of caution here, find a small independent garage and ask them to change the oil, it will be around £30 and never use that dealer again who serviced the car.
Find another dealer who can stamp the book

Bit worried about the warranty if i use an independant on such a new car? Or affect on resale value..
However, i will take your advice, and when we collect the car tomorrow, we will check the dipstick level and oil colour infront of the workshop guy, as well as getting a sample. And i will avoid that branch of Dagenham Motors from now on.

Apparently on the issue of oil colour, Ford say ALL diesel engines turn the oil black and full of particulate as soon as the oil goes in. I'm positive that my last TDCI had normal colour oil when i used to do a level check. Are they talking tosh?

As the car has only done 9000 miles and is only a year old, main dealer service history will carry better resale value than and independent, I agree, don't use that dealer again but either another Ford dealer or main dealer for another manufacturer, yes, during the warrenty period an indepedent can do work as long as they used specified parts but a dealer stamp will always carry more kudos on selling the car. If you are planning to keep the car for some time then the independant garage is the way to go.
I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world

I was about to post this - from what I've heard modem diesels turn the oil black almost instantly so I think they're telling the truth on this one.
