Sorry, you're right.. I was misreading it
BT have to officially give notice to its customers by updating its electronic price list not writing to customers individually (though they usually do, especially with big changes).

Surely there's a difference between choosing not to take a discount for using direct debit and being charged extra for paying promptly and in full by a normal acceptable method, i.e. by cheque into a bank?0

I'd say BT want people to pay by DD because it's cheaper for them - saves them having to physically handle cheques received by post or pay a third party - the Post Office - to forward payments made over the counter.
Having reached what they may see as saturation point with the carrot of a £1/month discount, they've decided to apply 'reverse incentive' methods at the same time as raising the price for those not paying by DD by 50p/month.
Loath or like it, it's a clever ploy (which they will certainly have had to received approval from Ofcom to do).Their - possessive pronoun (owned by them e.g. "They locked their car").
They're - colloquial/abbreviated version of 'They are'
There - noun (location other than here e.g. "You can buy groceries there") OR adverb (in or at that place e.g. "They have lived there for years") OR adverb (to or towards that place e.g. "Go there at noon") OR adverb (in that matter e.g. " I agree with you there").0 -

That won't result in totally free CLI - but 11p/month (2 evening or weekend UK 01/02 calls) is not far off!
I use the recommended combination of Primus for weekend and evening calls and 18185 for daytime calls. As I do not put any calls through BT they have just charged me £4.46 plus VAT for caller display. I objected as I was not informed of this new charge but to no avail. I was told that six calls per quarter through BT would result in the charge being dropped. BUT how can I make a BT call when I am signed in to Primus and all calls are routed through them? Is there a way of over-riding Primus to make the required six BT calls per quarter?0 -

As Step 4 in my suggested 6-steps to voice telephony recommends, use a 1280 prefix for any 0844 or 0871 calls you have to make.
The 6 calls aspect can sometimes be dealt with by using that prefix for weekday and weekend 0845 calls and for evening and weekend 0870 calls - when BT are cheaper than 18185.
Alternatively/additionally, you could, like I do, program the number of your local Indian takeaway into your phone with a 1280 prefix! As they don't open until 6pm, I know each call will only cost 5½p.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
QSurveyor wrote:Is it legal for BT to fine people £4.50 per quarter for paying promptly by cheque through a bank? If it is legal payment in full by or before the due date, what is the £4.50 for? If I refused to pay the £4.50, what would be my legal position?
qsurveyor i am not sure it is legal and have lodged a formal complaint on the grounds of discriminating against an individual (me) who pays in full for a service in advance of recieving that service on a quarterley basis. i have my calls and broadband through tiscali (yes i know i can have line rental as well) but i am seeing how BT respond to my formal complaint and will pusue via ofcom or whoever. I have also asked them to quantify the £4.50p increase as it represents a 13% increase or thereabouts. Do any other moneysavers think i am bonkers or am i justified in following this through.0 -

Its legal and is actually a 4.5% not 13% increase.
There is little point complaining - Virgin Media/NTL charge £5 per month (not per quarter) if you don't pay by direct debit...

That's brilliant - thank you very much. I'll do just that. Pete0 -
Mike_S wrote:It seems notice of this charge was buried in the recent issue of the BT "Update" leaflet. I didn't know about this until I saw it in http://www.maturetimes.co.uk/node/1763
BT does offer a discount of £3 per quarter for paying by DD - but double-check to make sure you get the discount if you do sign up to their DD scheme.
That cursed Update leaflet - its about time BT were made to separate advertising and changes in Ts & Cs into 2 distinct areas.
Hiding nasty news behind, in between and within other pieces of irrelevant info ..... now who else does that? :think:0
