Just moving back line rental from PO to BT ... signed up for together 1 package, as to avoid the 18m commitment ...so seems like its 3 month commitment- is that on the line only or on calls / does that stop me using an automatic carrier ( not predial ) within 3 monthsAny posts on here are for information and discussion purposes only and shouldn't be seen as (financial) advice.0

The commitment is on line rental only.

Beate wrote:Never knew about this thread until I got my phone bill today with a page long "Keeping you informed". They are saying make two chargeable calls a month in order not to pay for your 1571, can anyone tell me what classifies as a "chargeable" or "inclusive" call please? They put stars next to those two words as if there was a footnote explaining it, only that there ain't.
*Note, excludes calls made via BT Broadband Talk
"chargeable" or "inclusive" call on BT Option 2 or Option 3 is a inclusive/free UK call or a chargeable mobile or international call.
On Option 1, its a "chargeable" call - i.e. not to a 0800 or other freephone number.
Don't forget you can use Friends and Family/Bestfriend to keep the cost of these down..They are also saying I must access 1571 every 90 days in order to keep 1571 active. Well, I access it every time I get a message (I have my mobile phone linked to it so I get a notification, and yes, I know that this costs me), but if there was no message for 90 days, could I just dial 1571, listen to the "You've got no new messages" thing and that would qualify?
Yes, that will qualify - I think they only want to make sure the service is being used (as they have to pay for it)
Assuming you are on BT Option 1, depending on how many text message notification messages you receive, Option 2 may be cheaper as you get 100 free text messages with that (as well as the inclusive evening/weekend calls)

Thank you Sunil, that helps a lot. I don't receive too many text messages, as it's usually only my Mum who thinks it's cool to leave a message. I am indeed on Option 1, always thought it to be the cheapest if you don't make a lot of calls (my "cost of calls" were under £5 this month), but there is a note on my latest bill offering "a year's Free UK Evening & Weekend calls by switching to Option 2. Pay the same price that you currently pay for Option 1. 18 month contract. Conditions apply"
Would you think that's a good idea or will I pay over the odds in the last 6 months of the 18 month contract when I pay the normal Option 2 charges?Reclaimed thanks to this site:

Would you think that's a good idea or will I pay over the odds in the last 6 months of the 18 month contract when I pay the normal Option 2 charges?Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -

The BT offer isn't bad but as Heinz has stated, the Primus tariff is even better with free evening and weekend calls for no subscription fee.
However, if you do this, make sure you prefix enough calls with '1280' which routes them over BT's network (especially 0844/5/, 0870/1 numbers) to ensure that you continue to qualify for the free caller display and 1571 services.
In fact, the entire 6 step plan in Heinz's signature is worth reading.. though I think uswitch are running the £15/quarter credit offer again which makes the Primus tariff they offer sightly better value for the first year, than the one suggested in those steps.

Yes, as its a CPS based service.
However, as I mentioned a couple of posts ago, if you do this, make sure you prefix enough calls (2/month or 6/quarter based on how often you are billed) with '1280' which routes them over BT's network (especially 0844/5/, 0870/1 numbers) to ensure that you continue to qualify for the free caller display and 1571 services if you take advantage of them.
Also, don't forget that if you change to online billing only, BT will reduce your line rental from £11-->10.75/month for Option 1.

Looks like something may get done about this eventually, unless BT manage to wriggle out of it

I hope so, there are a lot of people, previously who had their pensions and entitlements paid by order book who've been forced to switch to Basic Bank accounts that have no DD facility.
These are usually the most vulnerable in society - shame on BT>0
