  • Hi Everyone,
Just signed up to the forum and wondered if anyone may be able to advise us.

My wife and I are expecting a baby in April and are currently renting a flat privately. (Have looked into shared ownership and not viable). We are looking at renting a house for £600 a month and are wondering what sort of benefits we may be able to get. Household income is £21,000.

I have made a list below of what I hope we may get, but as you can see there are a lot of question marks! Any help / advice would be much appreciated.

    Child Benefit - £17.45 a week (£907 a year)
    Child Maintenance - ?
    Tax Credits £2300? (a year)
    Rent allowance ?
    Council tax rebate ?
    Income Support ?

    Thanks

on £21K + Tax Credits: Income Support,Council Tax Benefit and Housing Benefit wont pay as your income is well over the thresholds for claiming them
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
  • Hi experts, Please can one of you advise me? My husband has been very very ill for three years and unable to work. I work- however its hard, always broke !!husband retires this year.

Was / would it be possible for me to have his income tax threshold onto my own so I pay less tax? Anything to help, the situation is dire!!

Your advice would be so appreciated.

Tax Credits can only go to one of the parents.

    Thanks for your help.
The income is joint between my wife and I and is probably overestimated.
The tax credits I mentioned is just an estimate from what I read online.
I also found a benefit calculator which calculated that we would get a rent rebate of about £50. Perhaps this didn't take tax credit into account.

It's rather unfair that I know people on higher incomes than my wife and I who rent a council property at half what we pay, and yet despite us having higher outgoing and lower incomings we may not get assistance!

    Thanks again

I am sick to the back teeth of the Housing Benefit system. I applied for Housing Benefit due to being on a low wage and living in private rented housing ment that i could hardly afford my rent. My children live with my mother and i have regular access to them at weekends and i cant see them during the week as i am at work. I have a two bed roomed terraced house and the Housing Benifit people said that it is too big for me and therefore i am not entitled to benefit. If i dont have two bedrooms then i will not be able to have access to my children at all.

I dont know what to do

Also, why do they not take my off my travel costs to work as it costs me £60 per month to get there. This is not "disposable income"

Oh and i just remembered, that at the beginning of the letter of entitlement where they explain all the workings out - they take £5 off what i would be entitled to, with no explaination as to why. Is this usual?
One day, i will be a genius.

Hi all, I wonder if you or anyone else can help me here, I am being made redundant in about 6 weeks time, at that time I will be 26 weeks pregnant (redundancy is NOT due to pregnancy) I don't want to be looking for a job at this time and would rather wait till after my maternity is over, I am aware I can claim Maternity Allowance but will I be able to claim any other benefits, ie more child tax credit (I already recieve it for my 2yr old) or working tax credit or help with council tax etc, I've never claimed anything before so am unsure how to go about it all, I have been to my local CAB office but they proved to be absolutely rubbish, I have also contacted job centre plus but am still awaiting a reply, any help or a push in the right direction would be appreciated.

    thanks

    Hi again,

Well basically the man I spoke to at CAB gave me a four line print-out which said I could claim incapacity benefit, when I asked him If I would still be able to claim my Maternity Allowance he said no I don't think so, and I had to tell him I would be better off with MA as it £108 per week where IB is less than £60, he couldn't tell me anything other than this, I've found more info on this site than I did at CAB.

Can I also add that I will also get 9 weeks wages on top of this, not sure If this makes a difference.
