2 more boxes emptied from the spare room... 1 empty crate binned as the bottom was all split, 2 crates of dressing up stuff away in the girls room, N64 put in a very appropriate little corner of the bedroom.. needs OH to move the TV onto the stand. Girls cleared their bedroom floor, I filled a binbag of dressing up for nursery and a binbag of rubbish.. bins were emptied today so I can go on a finging frenzy again. Henry emptied and girls room vacuumed.. it looks fabulous in there compared to this morning..

I found a huge box of DS1s stuff so he has been text to come pick it up or sort out what he wants to keep and fling it in the back of the car and we will drop it round there ASAP.

I am now left with :

1 binbag dresses/boys suits and shirts
    3 boxes of books
    2 binbags of wool
    1 crate of fabric
    1 bucket of random toys
1 crate of happyland track (must ebay that lot!!)
    1 bedside chest of drawers
1 set of plastic drawers.. full of toiletries mainly so can easily be shifted through

    look... pwitties...

    WTG Piggers!

I have cleaned my bedroom (DD had vacuumed the lounge and it isn't bad so I decided to focus on the dumping-ground AKA the boudoir)

DD had a TV/DVD combo so I've stuck it in my room - can't think what else to do with it. Anyway it's in a usable position

been through the paperwork and I have missed a payment:( my new resolution is to 'schedule'the payments when I get the bills then this wont happen. I know what DID happen though - I was SO busy with stuff that things didn't really get looked at and I managed not to open this one!

I'm off to my baby sister's tomorrow - I MUST rememebr to take two things back...*fling* and there are work things I need to get ahead with.

So I have put my list for tomorrow in a word document. That way I can open it up without the internet distracting me. Hope to come back tomorrow night at a similar time to see Thursdays list (husband off work Thursday/Friday) so please make it a kind one :)

Loving tomorrows list as I don't have a study or stairs to worry about (top floor small flat).

Started working on my frog list, thanks for making the front page so easy to read and understand :) The jargon busting bit is really helpful too. Just wanted to say thanks again.

I had a jam mentor (now with us no more, sadly), and it's one she told me and written on a bit of card which I've tucked in my recipe book - having said that I now KNOW some recipes for jam off-by-heart - but I should, by now. I've never had a jam go mouldy despite reusing (and reusing and reusing) jars - thought I do check the screw caps. I've never wax-sealed but I was a lab technician in a previous life (seems like) and I think jamming appeals to the mad scientist within!

I am a jam-making virgin so please be gentle with me :p
My mum is bringing me loads of plums from her tree on Thur I am going to [STRIKE]try to[/STRIKE] make jam with the recipe you posted earlier today. I know I have to sterilise the jars but can I just use old jam jars with screw top lids?? Please don't laugh too loudly :rotfl:

    Not laughing at all BB

make sure your jars and lids are washed.

I have my oven on low (Gas 1/2) and I stand the jars up, on a baking tray, with the lids face up (lid next to own jar because they're all different)

I turn oven off about 5 mins before I expect jam to be done. I allow jam to cool for a couple of minutes before pouring into jars - it's lumpy and it splashes, so be careful.

I pop lids on jar (I do one tray at a time) then wrap my dishcloth round the jar to hold it while I screw the lid on as tightly as I can while still hot - but I have 'asbestos' hands and I can do this. As the jars cool I retighten (if necessary). #

The jam will take a LONG time to set - but if you have jars with 'seals' in the lids you'll hear popping as the jam cools and contracts. This creates a vacuum - the jars MUST be airtight.

There is a brilliant thread in old style - The Preserver's year - which includes jam but also pickles and chutneys

always happy to help initiate newbies into the arts of jamming.

(Did you know that some 'cheap' strawberry jams are made with other fruits - and have strawberry flavour ADDED?)

and BB - plum is a great start - loads of natural pectin.

When you think your jam is done - ie it has been at a 'rolling' boil for 10 mins

    take off heat
drop a small amount onto a chilled saucer (which has been in the fridge a LONG time)
push the jam away from you with your fingertip - the glossy drop with 'wrinkle' if the jam is ready. If not back on the heat, boil for a couple more minutes and retest (because you stuck the plate back in the fridge so it's still cold)

If you start to get a toffee smell STOP cooking
Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY
