Thanks for bringing this up Strepsy i have longed for someone to mention it as i didn't want to;)

I have had to resort to looking at how many views there are to threads and try and judge whether i think they are older ones that i would have already entered but again that depends on how replies there are on it.
I have also entered a few comps where i thought they were new and then gone to thank but only then noticed i'd already entered.

I've done that too a few times recently when people have bumped posts from months ago just to say thanks. It's very frustrating.

I want to say thanks to Strepsy for bringing this up.

I wasn't going to post anything as most people have said how I feel, but just now, working my way through the the threads, I find I've just entered a comp I've already entered.
I understand in the grand scheme of things it's not that important, but mainly just slightly annoying.
I know it's partly my fault for not looking that I'd originally thanked the person (I have an excuse that it's late and I've been up since 6am and at work for half the day) This place keeps me up you see!:rotfl:

No one should take offence at what is being said in this thread, but common sense prevailing, it makes for a smoother board IMO.
    :D

Oh and edit to say, James240, you are never going to catch up with Kipper!:rotfl:
But I've given you an honourary thanks to keep you going!

Thanks for this thread Strepsy. What with the forum quiz you're a real star.

Just want to add my 2p. I really enjoy this forum and in a way, we've become a victim of our own success. Its great that so many people have joined us, the number of comps has increased, and even more people are winning. This success though does mean its become more difficult (time consuming) checking threads to see if they are new to you. Monday in particular can be quite chaotic.

Having banter is great and helps build online friendships and I'd hope that'd continue but maybe we need to point/ encourage people in the direction of the discussion sticky for general chit chat about comps, or suggest starting a new sticky like the MSE arms (it could be a snug?) for more informal chats - like the introduce yourself thread?.

I think specific questions/ clarifications/ duplicates/T&Cs/ end dates or anything that helps the comp along should still be added to threads that need them though.

At the end of the day, however, it is an open forum and as long as they are within the MSE rules, people are entitled to post. IMHO the benefits & fun of this forum far outweigh the downsides.

Thanks Strepsy for bringing this up! :T

Just tonight has been particularly bad (not getting at any one person) I have spent ages going over stuff I've already done.

I agree with mpython we are victims of our own success - this thread is so busy now it takes at least an hour a day to keep up, so thanks everyone for posting!

Each day I go to where I left off the night before and work my way through - so when threads are bumped it is very frustrating.

I agree that if (for simple comps -ie not choccie ones!) we stuck to the 'thanks' button then the forum runs much smoother.

    Good luck everyone!

Thanks Strepsy for raising an issue in a very diplomatic way and saying what I have been thinking (but been too afraid to say).

Hopefully this will encourage more people to post as it seems to be a more active board of late and may it continue:) I think "posted here" comments is great, as sometimes you forget what comps you have entered. But also it is understandable why first time comps posters feel a bit miffed of the comment of "check your thanks".. Hopefully this will clear up any misunderstandings and this board can continue with the friendly banter and loads of great comps:)

Can I just veer off at a slight tangent and ask if there is some kind of reward for getting a lot of thanks? I've noticed (not so much on the comps forum but on other ones) quite a few people have lines asking for thanks in their sigs - is it just some sort of ego trip or do they move up some sort of ranking system?

A few times on the Pigsback thread I have seen people copy links and answers that have already been posted by somebody else, then say something like "please thank me if you find this useful" as if they are trying to hijack the OP's thanks - is there a good reason for doing this or are they just pr*ts?

Anyway, going back to thanks on the comp threads, I agree that if there is some sort of follow up, query or clarification to a comp it should still have a reply even though it bumps it up - in fact bumping it up might help people who were hanging on for clarification before entering. But just adding a thanks comment makes it all far too confusing.

I've hardly even looked at the forum for about three weeks as I've not been well and I'm now at least a zillion comps behind. If I spend all day entering them and adding thanks messages, feel free to strangle me......
How sweet it is to do nothing..... and then rest afterwards.
