  • People who don't enter many t/b'ers are often in the best position to win them. I'll explain,
People who have had wins from t/bs often think Oh I can write even better than that, so they try too hard, They try and use clever words, stop being original and totally lose the plot. New compers have very few preconceptions of past winning slogans so their entries are more original. Keeping it apt & simple wins more times than not.
Read a few past winning entries,to get the feel of them.
Think about the whole theme of the comp, and what the judges might want to read. Decide on a rhyming couplet, a few apt complimentary phrases, play around with your words, keep it snappy & make sure it scans.
Read it out loud, let someone else read it back to you, forget it for a day then read it again, If you're still happy send it off.
Tiebreakers are the only form of entry were the judges actually look at your efforts,,,,,,,,,
    Good Luck

Oooh don't get me started on people that 'expect' thanks in their sigs:rotfl:
I think it's mainly newbies that do that;)

    You're saying they're just pr*ts then?
How sweet it is to do nothing..... and then rest afterwards.

I don't get it myself, but their motives definately seems strange.

I've only been comping in earnest since the beginning of this year, and initially I had no idea that the reply bumped the post up. I remembering wondering where the post had disappeared to! It was only when I had my hand smacked tactfully in a message from hbk2006 that I realised what I was doing. I do now try, very hard, to only post odd replies to current days comps. Admittedly, sometimes my fingers work ahead of my brain and I find myself presing the 'post' button without thinking.

Would it be a good idea to have a note of how the replies work in the sticky at the top of the comps that tells how to use them.

When entering comps I always look at the 'thanks' 'quote' buttons at the bottom, and if the 'thanks' is not there I'm pretty sure that I've entered the comp.

Apologies for all the times that I've posted unecessary replies.

Maybe it would be a good idea for the basic rules sticky to be updated? Then people could read that when they are new to the board to avoid any misunderstandings etc?

It is difficult for newbies to work out what to do ~ its a bit like reading instruction manuals, ~ A lot of what I read just doesn't sink in, until I've done something, and tried it out. For an example, I only sussed out the thread tools at the top of the page a couple of weeks ago, and it makes life much easier to keep a track on comps I have not done, or daily, weekly, or monthly ones.
I try not to post replies when I have entered a comp, but feel a bit mean not posting a thanks as well as pressing the button, when such on the Real People etc type comps that have been very unselfishly posted are posted ~ maybe that is the reaction of others as well.

  • I can see how it causes problems. Is it Ok to say thanks to ppl who provide all the answers for comps like Chat and Take a Break etc? I do think they do so much work and it's very kind of them to share with everyone. I feel a bit greedy just taking their answers without a written thanks as well as hitting the thanks button but if it's agreed we do that then I'm fine with it.

I'll probably get flamed for this, but tbh I don't care its just my thoughts

I was thinking about this thread last night after I posted on it and a conversation I had with djl on a thread this morning sparked it off again

Is it really that bad that someone thanks a thread by typing? yes I know its annoying as it does bump up a comp that many may have entered and then they assume its a new one and sometimes I find it mildly amusing when people drag up ones from ages ago... I think to myself god how many pages did you go back to find that one!

But we can't say who can post what where and when, this is a public forum after all, and the convo with djl this morning made me realise that some people may have read this thread and maybe felt a little put off, he felt bad that he was posting comments in a thread... and I don't want people to feel like that, I want them to come in here and enjoy what we do, add to what we do and make the comping community bigger and better and keep it going from strength to strength.

We can all make suggestions as to how this board could be run better, but ultimately if they were to be implemented it would probably make it a whole lot harder for the BG's as they run other boards too... we can suggest that newbies read the rules, but they probably won't. I don't think I've even read the rules properly and I've been posting on here for 2 and a half years!!

I think its a case of live and let live, if a thread gets bumped.. then so be it, I for one don't want to see this board looking like there is a load of whiny moaners on here

    kips :)
