Another one! VW golf bluemotion 1.9 tdi 2007. BLS engine. 100k miles. Engine exploded at 60mph. 2 holes in block. cylinder 2 & 3 conrods broken & hole in side of block & sump. Cracked windscreen from impact. Car requires new engine & high pressure fuel pump. VW not prepared to offer any goodwill.0

And another one....
57 plate 1.9tdi Touran, fully serviced.
Happened on the motorway with the kids on board but we were luckily in the slow lane.
Just checked and its the BXE engine. What a surprise.
Am now looking at options of where to go from here.0 -
How many miles had your touren done when the engine blew up?The Early bird may catch the worm ...but its the second mouse that gets all the cheese!0

22/5/2015 - Another for the list.
07 plate Skoda Octavia 1.9 PD TDI, BXE engine code with 102,000 miles, 4th conrod has exited out of the sump, car regularly serviced and no oil warning light at the time.
Quote of £5.5k from an independent VAG specialist garage for a totally new engine, not recon, have decided to sell the car on eBay as a non runner.0 -
7th June 2015 - Another BXE bits the dust.
57 plate Audi A3 1.9 BXE engine with 90,000 miles, engine seized at 40mph, all oil out on the road. No oil light came on. Awaiting engine to be removed, so cannot actually see what has happened, but given speed of failure pretty sure it is a conrod.
Been quoted £4.5 for a repair, but have found a 2nd hand engine from a newer insurance write off with 46k, even so looking at a total bill of £2K.
Had a 05 VW Golf before the Audi, same 1.9 engine, no problems at all upto 115K. Deliberately went for the 1.9TDI A3, because of 1.9's reliability........0 -

The last generation 1.9 TDI's used in the Audi A3 8P models aren't exactly the same as the older 1.9 TDI engines in the older generation of cars. I'm talking about the 1.9 TDI's that were used in the 2007-2010 Audi A3's.
They have some tweaks and modifications to make them sound less 'agricultural' and as a result, aren't as reliable as the older generation models using the 1.9 TDI. Some also have the DFP.
Did you always change the oil every year or 10k miles? Did you use the proper VW 505.01 approved oil?0 -
Since I have had the car (bought it with 56K on clock) it has always had the required VW approved Castrol Edge fully synthetic oil. Has gone for long life service intervals. Oil light never came on before it exploded.
Engine has just been taken out, and garage confirms conrod through the side. Car doesn't have a DPF. Turbo appears OK, so oil pressure looks as if it was OK upto the point it went bang.
I'm nervous about the replacement '09 engine, although looking through the threads all the engines that go bang are all '07 &'08's. Maybe the '09 being newer they haven't reached the mileage, although most '07-08 engines seem to fail between 46 - 100K, so would assume that most '09 engines would be in or through that range by now.
VW must have done something to the BXE in 07, which they discovered was an error and corrected in 09, but have kept quiet about it.0 -
Guess what , 99% Seat serviced car to which I have had it less than a year its a 59 Reg Leon 1.9TDI with the BXE Engine. It has only done 83k and I have exactly the same fault.
We ALL need to report it to watchdog, and get them on the case with this one as they must recall as someone will get killed!Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0 -
My BXE 56 reg Golf now covered 142k so expecting a failure at any mo.
Lovely car fitted with a time bomb.
I too was led to believe that the 1.9 was bullet proof. How wrong can you be?
My questions start with,
Are they all affected?
Any idea of the percentage of failures as there are so many about in various models?
Is it possible to fit a non BXE replacement engine or must it be as original to mat:ch ECU etc?0 -

VW Touran Se Tdi 105
Engine BXE 619919
