VW Touran Engine Blown Up

  • Hi,

I know this thread is a bit old, but thought I would add in that my 58-plate VW Passat ( 75,000 miles, always serviced on the dot ) suffered this issue whilst driving on the M25 on the 16th March. Luckily I was right next to Jn24, and came straight off - I dread to think what might have happened if I had not been able to do this, particularly with 2 young kids in the car.

I am waiting for it to be assessed by the local VW garage, but will be pressing for a FOC replacement engine as a goodwill gesture at the very least, but I am not confident that I will be successful.

My report form has been sent to VOSA by email, but I will post it as well, just to be sure.

Did anyone find out the number of vehicles sold? Wouldn't a FOI request to DVLA for all VAG group vehicles with engine number starting blah, blahn registered between xx.xx.xxx and yy.yy.yyyy give the info?

Hi I have just had the same problem with my wife's Audi A3 bxe engine, she was in the fast lane on the motorway then bang. The car has been serviced regularly and I purchased this car for here thinking she would be safe in a reliable German car ! Now after reading up on this engine I am left fuming that it's obviously a bad batch of engines and the manufacturers have done nothing about it and left people in dangerous cars ! Has anyone got anywhere with there complaints ??

Conrods are among the most highly stressed component of an engine, unlike lightweight aluminium pistons they are heavy forged steel so the reciprocating mass forces alone are immense, over 1000g.

Highly tuned motors often have aftermarket rods fitted, or the rods are polished, weight matched and x ray checked for cracks. Lots of failures of a certain engine code series points to serious design or manufacturing fault.

Conrodcon have you considered getting a metallurgist's report?
an x ray or dye crack test of the other intact rods and the surface finish might be revealing too.
  • Which number conrod is it cannot tell from picture

£10k cost to VW can be offset as a cost and reduce tax....

And so can the cost of a like for like car.

This tax argument is ridiculous. Any logical person would rather make more money and pay more tax than the alternative. Wouldn't you rather pay £2k in tax making £8k profit (net of tax), rather than pay just £1k in tax but make only £4k (net)?!

Depends how I structure my business. If I can offset my losses against several various businesses, I can keep profits down to below tax bands/thresholds. I can lend money to loss making businesses, at preferential rates with tax relief. I can carry my losses over to next year, and offset them against profits in a good year. You need a good accountant.

Or you can minimise your expenses and find a good accountant to structure your tax affairs. Dividend and PAYE thresholds can be worked around without taking the view that the more money you can spend the better as you'll save tax.

Hmm, nope, the more you spend, you less you earn. Spend it with yourself though. And get those business trips to Barbados in.
