VW Touran Engine Blown Up

Hi All

I have a Touran S TDi just under 4 year old and just over 62000 miles
This weekend the con rod has gone through the block I contacted my local dealer for a quote and to see if they would help us pay for a new engine as a good will gesture as the car is only just out of warranty we have been asked to pay £380 for them to strip the engine so they can make a report of the cause and IF it was a manufactures fault they will ask head office to consider our request.

My question is has anyone been though this?
What do you think my chances are?
Or should I just take it on the chin and part x it in?

I would say pay the money and let them do it. If they do find a faulty part it will be worth it. I managed to get a new engine out of VW six years ago in similar circumstances on a Passat. Let's face it, it wont be worth much on trade in without an engine and the worst that can happen is you lose £380 pounds for nothing. Personally I would give it a go.

Have all terms of the warranty been complied with i.e service intervals etc

If so you stand a chance, if not or there's any doubt re oil/parts used then IMHO I'd expect them to find a reason not to assist.

Pay for what ?
It to be completely fixed or them to take a look ?
The cause is know, the small end has failed and the conrod has hit the block.
I would invest your money in a reconditioned engine and not in good will.
Once you start the dance and they have the £380 then what, an endless bill for a new engine.
Time to cut your losses and replace the engine.

Hi Yes the services have all been done by the local dealer so was its 1st MOT my local dealers seem conferdent, I am just very sceptical life never seems to go my way :-(

The £380 is for 4hrs labour to strip it.

Can you get the £380 back if you are in the clear?

If they are so confident then the labour charges will be covered.
Pay nothing, or pay to have it sorted privately where they dont charge £95 an hour.
If they find against you the total bill will be in the region of:
New Engine £3575
Labour 12 hours @ £95 £1140
oil and filters £185
Plus VAT !
Plus the £380 to have a look

I would want some firm assurances in writing before we start, how obvious does it have to be the engine has suffered an internal component failure ?
A recon engine will be around £1500 or insurance accident scrap engine around £1000

At least when I broke down the AA checked it and confirmed the oil levels were full and it says that on the recovery sheet.

Right spoke to my guy who knows all the tricks ..
Who has the vehicle now ?
VW are aware of the conrod failure on these engines and the exact engine code batches effected.
They then claim the oil has been over filled causing the problem.
You need to check the oil level now with a witness and a camera, dipstick have been known to miraculously rise in oil level all by themselves once the dealer gets them on people trying to make warranty claims , oo look sir you have overfilled the oil, ta, ta.

carefull about documentation that simply states engine oil full, this can interpretated in many ways. if it states oil levels checked oil at recommended level, your fine, but engine oil full? can be seen as engine full of oil i.e flooded over filled.

i agree that you should collate evidence to back yourself up incase VW dealer decides its full of engine oil its been over filled, i would also, photo ,video, with time and dates, and a have your whitness (not family member) in the shots if possible dont start it up, take a shot of mileage, so when they collect it, review it, they cant argue you drove it to destruction knowing it had a fault.

dont hand over cash upfront to have it stripped, let them strip it and provide documented proof of the outcome.
