They were on National rail site but had to be bought in advance, I think they may stop selling them at 6p.m. the day before travel. Cheapest, easy option from Stafford now looks like the £45:10 saver return, which you can buy at the station in the morning. Or you could get a saver return to Birmingham from Stafford at £7:50, then a return from Birmingham Moor Street-London Marylebone for £27:50, which is a tenner cheaper but more hassle, and again can be bought at the station in the morning.

i want to travel from edinburgh to london in second week of august and return in two days. we are 2 adults one with a senior rail card. We are flexible as to which day we go and which day we get back as long as we get 2 days in london.

i cant seem to get any return tickets for less than £170 odd. I have tried splitting tickets in berwick upon tweed, chathill and new castle but seem to get the price down. Pl. help.

Have you tried single tickets in each direction? They look to be reasonably available. If you are really lucky (probably a bit late though) you could get the total cost down to under £60.

Even a standard saver ticket is only £163 for the two of you - less than the figure you've quoted - where did you get it from??

Peterborough might be a good place to split tickets if you have to, but advance booking is a more reliable way of reducing costs.

Do the train companies stop doing cheap advance singles in August? Normally on the Preston-Birmingham route you can get them, but i was checking various dates right the way through August on thetrainline.com and there didn't appear to be any (cheapest is the standard £31 fare).

No but they probably reduce the quota and it runs out quicker.

    Go to http://www.gner.co.uk/GNER

Put your return journey requirements in the box on the right

When you get the return prices up click the box 'singles from £29.05'

They will appear - though the cheapest ones have gone you should still be able to do it for under £140 total - a bit less if you are not fussy about trains

I've checked 6 7 and 9 August with good results
