Yes, the reason being that they are avaricious ignorant feral scum who have proved they thoroughly deserve to wallow in the sewers they have created for themselves without any more money for youth clubs and community centres.

    You have all the answers...

Are they really 'driven' though? Is it a political act, or have they had the realisation that, if sufficient numbers are concentrated on the streets in the same area at the same time, there is little coercive force that can be levied upon them; there are few consequences, and the thrill of power is theirs?
Maybe you've just part answered the question.

Maybe you're therefore narrowing the field as to the potential answers? We need the powers that be to look a little deeper, I feel.

Or, maybe we can all just carry on ranting :D Long term solutions are overrated anyways ;)

I thought earlier I had read a university lecturer? Maybe it was the student I read, maybe its both.

To me looking at the footage I didn't see a colour leaning overall (though were definitely shots showing just one colour). Some reports have said as young as eleven. I think some looked comfortably over teenage too.

In anycase, from the pithy job titles it would seem these people have a future or current career or hopes.

The army could be the right place for 'em? Break and rebuild their personalities. Install a sense of comradship and give 'em a physical release for energies. Army won't take their !!!!!!.

Manchester cleanups are being organised on facebook at the moment, with hundreds of people joining, and taking brushes, dustpans, bin bags etc down to the affected areas tommorow morning.

    Makes you smile :)

fc123 - are you in woolwich? on bbc news website that there is looting in woolwich high st...

Yes, I am about half a mile away up high on the tp of Shooters Hill. I missed the noise of the Woolwich riot as I went to bed.
Drove through there this morning and had no idea there had been one as I only got whatever news from this thread.

    Link to YT woolwich

OH spoke to the security guard on our ind estate and the road going past it was closed off last night. It is surrounded by high fence etc with 24 hr security so our premises feels safe-ish. Fortunately, it doesn't look like a place where there is any loot either.

Son got back from Cannes this morning and was fretting about us (and was our house still standing) as, due to a 5 am flight, he decided not to go to bed and kept awake by watching the London riots on his laptop. He got back and everything seemed as normal to him. Said it felt strange though.

Is there "any" excuse for this appaling behaviour?
There is never an excuse IMO and I have lived on one of the roughest, hardest estates in the UK (so bad they pulled it down).

No, parents are busy shifting the gear on ebay!

Great story how Turkish community in Dalston dealt with the looters, they waited for them with bats! Worked!
Son saw the YT and the feeling was good for them standing up to the opportunist looters (rioters is too nice a word for them)
I know it'll be fine here. Rationally. But I still feel edgy.

I think it was ok up your way but the W1 riots a few months back were pretty full on too.

Well,we had an odd journey back from Earls Court.....the roads were deserted @ 5.30pm.
As we headed down towards Forest Hill, we started to notice groups of Specials around, chain supermarkets were already closed but independent grocers/corner stores were all open (and busy) and we looked at each other with a 'hmmm' as we were heading into Catford and Lewisham......was there something going down that we are unaware of?
The streets were deserted and the journey was like one @ 3am for speed.

As we were in a big van and couldn't hear anything untoward or see spirals of smoke in the distance, we figured we should just keep on going until we could go no further.

Everything was shut/shuttered (but some would be closed at that time anyway) and all was quiet we sailed through Catford and Lewisham but Greenwich made me sad.

All the shops had had hoardings put up around them (and these are people I know as we had a store in Greenwich during the 90's).

Greenwich council wouldn't allow us to have steel shutters inside or out as it 'spoilt' the look of the town and it's always rankled local traders as we needed to protect our glass facsias just from wild saturday nights.

We heard that Blackheath had some looting last night too with a few shops (independents with one selling designer gear) smashed up and looted.

    It's very quiet outside now.

I can't contribute anything else meaningful except it winds me up and I can't wait to move out again one day....oh... and I am really glad I no longer own an indeopendent store too.

it's been very quiet in my part of London, the only sounds are police cars and helicopters. Most people went home around 4pm and it was weird to see all my local shops boarded up in the middle of the day - even the ones that are usually open every day, like my corner shop. This morning London felt strangely empty....
The only good thing about these riots that they have brought communities together, there are clean ups organised locally, lots of people volunteering to help and people standing up to protect their communities. Nice video from Dalston last night:

What saddened me last night is seeing lots of bystanders on the news watching the looting??? Either do something or go home!
