Wow! One family - so they are the 100 youths in Morrisons car park - one for the family planning people I think. Large parts of Cambourne are a glorified sink estate and regarded as such.

We're also looking this area, as well as other parts East Anglia - does March have anything going for it - or anything against it, please?

    Hi
We live in Peterborough, which is in the Northern part of Cambridgeshire, but I used to work in Huntingdon. There isn't much to do in Huntingdon and some areas can be pretty rough. St Neots or St Ives is nicer.
Peterborough has good rail links and some very lovely surrounding areas.
Not a bad part of the county at all. Any reason why you do not want to go further North than March?

Depending on what you are looking for property in March can be cheap. There's not much active nightlife, a few pubs and a very grotty nightclub, but most people travel to Peterborough/Cambridge for the nightlife anyway. The town centre is pleasant enough, but don't expect any big name shops as most of the shops are run by small independent traders, although there is a Sainsbury's in the town centre. It has fairly good transport links and a train station with relatively quick links to London, 1 hour 30 mins via Peterbourgh is about average (just don't use the direct service as this takes over 3 hours!).

If you are after access to the countryside then there are plenty of green spaces with a few seconds of the town, but be warned the landscape can appear quite stark as it is totally flat.

Ive lived in St Neots all my life. I'm now 24 and bought a house in Eaton Socon last September.

Its not the cheapest place to buy, but it is in a good location. You can be in Kings Cross in around 45mins if you get on the right train and Eaton Socon is walking distance to St Neots town cenre and train station.

As previously mentioned, avoid the oxmoor in huntingdon. You'll know if your looking at houses there, cos it will be too cheap to be true, and have no windows (still, one less thing to look through, I suppose).

I believe commuting to cambridge can be a tiresome journey as the A428 can get very busy at peak times, but its very close to the A1, and less than 15 mins from the A14, so fairly good transport links...

There is a website with pictures and forum etc at:

    Maybe worth taking a look?

We went to see a house in Oakington today... really liked the house just not sure of the location. I know that there are plans to build a new town sandwiched between Oakington and Longstanton but not at all sure (despite endless Google searches) how this will affect Oakington itself. There is also Oakington Detention centre (but actually I think it's nearer to Longstanton than Oakington) and I'm clueless about the effects that has on the area (if any).
Do any of you amazing MSEers have any advice please?

Does anyone know what it's like to live in Oakington or have any idea how the proposed new town of Northstowe will affect Oakington? We need to move near to Cambridge for work and we've seen a lovely house for sale there but are clueless about this village! Google searches don't come up with anything much either. Any info gratefully received:beer:

  • Oakington is nice, especially since they got rid of their most troublesome family!
The new development is going on the site of the detention centre, which itself is on the site of the old barracks, and is called Northstowe - search for that and you must find something. From what I recall the new town will virtually join up the surrounding villages, with open spaces of about 200yds seperating them.
Getting into Cambridge from any direction during the rush hours (7 - 9 and 3.30 - 6.30) is hell from any direction, it just takes longer the further away you are, and even-more-so if you have to use the A14.
Thankfully working shifts I don't have to rely on the A14 for getting to work during rush hour - I would hate it if I had to. From Oakington there is a cyclepath straight into Cambridge for the decent days anyway - save money and keep fit:j

We viewed the March house, we were considering.

found the garden was at the fromt of the house, nothing at the back & was overlooked by a main road, with the actual garden level, a foot lower than this road, so even worse, when the doxens of lorries passed by.

Plus, in the EA details, you could just see the roof line, from adjoinig bungalow - we thought - either clever or careless picture taking, It's in fact a 2 storey house!! So NO PRIVACY whatsoever.

They also omitted to tell us the house had a lovely 30' x 6'6'' hallway, so not even being fair to the owners!

March isn't for us, but stopped off in Huntingdon (much nicer) on our way back, signed on with some agents there & we;ll wait n see!!

  • Great comments so far guys!

We have been looking at the chatteris/warbouys/ramsey areas... Any comments about these villages?
