scrummy_mummy, villagelife, glad you like the area as well.
Not to rub it in, but I'll think of you and raise a pint to your health and Debt Free Day as I sup a pint (only though as I'm skint) on the riverside in St Ives.Lightbulb moment - 02/01/2007

We want to move to Cambridgeshire too! We currently live in Suffolk and I commute to work in Cambridge city centre every day.... takes me an hour each way and I'm fed up of it... especially all the traffic jams... end up leaving home at 6.30 a.m. just to avoid the worst!
St Ives really appeals to me (went there for a course not long ago and thought it was really pretty). However, as the whole purpose of moving is to cut down my commute, can I ask how long does it take to get from St Ives to Cambridge city centre at peak traffic times?“A journey is best measured in friends, not in miles.”

St Ives <> Cambridge means A14, expect traffic problems at least once per week, and traffic chaos once per month. Even when there are no accidents I would allow 45 - 60 mins at peak times to commute to Cambridge. They are building a guided bus route (which nobody but the council actually wants) This will make the St Ives/Cambridge commute "different" whether it will be better in time/cost is anyones guess.
That said, there arn't many better satalite towns to live in and commute in to Cambridge, traffic is bad from all directions. The roads infrastructure is the same as it was 30 years ago. You could consider the A428 corridor from Hardwick to Caxton, once the A428 upgrade is completed later this year I'm expecting my 40 min commute to halve. If you don't mind new builds, you could check out Cambourne.0 -

We are moving there after living all our lives in Croydon/Surrey area since being born. We're actually gonna be going up to huntingdon on saturday to take a look round the area.
Apart from huntingdon/st.neots, are there any other areas in the south of the county that are nice places to live? Being near a train station isn't 100% necessary (no need for commuting), but we'd like to live somewhere that's green
We don't want to go too far north in the county (march etc) either...
peteborough.
check out ferry meadows country park, plenty of greenery there!
we take the kids, there nearly every day throughout the summer months very nice for walks, bike rides, windsurfing, cafe, feeding the ducks etc etc.
train station in the town centre, which is about 5 minutes drive from all areas in peterborough.
good shopping centres, and 24 hour tesco extra with stores like next,h&m,boots, cafes etc.
good areas near to ferry meadows, orton wistow, orton longueville, orton waterville, and some parts of orton brimbles.
wistow, waterville, and longueville my favourite areas!
or, hampton and hampton vale, built around the tesco extra.hampton is IMO better than hampton vale.
a few minutes from the A1.0 -
or castor / awalton / marholm for the village life0

St Ives to Cambridge commute isn't too bad. I have at times made the journey in 10 minutes, other times it has taken 45-50 mins. There is still too much traffic for the A14 and too many accidents which never help anyone. Still, St Ives is beautiful, and I would recommend to anyone. Especially as it would mean you could also come and listen to me play in one of the many pubs around the area, and I'll sing you to debt-free happiness! lolLightbulb moment - 02/01/2007

The pubs and singing sounds good! Are there any cinemas in St Ives (just done several searches and can't find any reference to one)? Or theatres? One of the reasons for wanting to move nearer to Cambridge is that currently we have to travel almost 30 miles to get to a cinema or theatre.. even pubs with live music would be goodreally want to be more 'in the swing'! LOL
Regarding journey time... I know it's a bit difficult to be exact given the awful traffic condtions going into Cambridge, but can you give me any idea of a 'normal' journey time to get into Cambridge at 8 a.m. for example, or coming home around 5 p.m.?“A journey is best measured in friends, not in miles.”
