Are they any less pointless anywhere else? I suppose if the point was to show them off to guests, it's perhaps not the obvious place, but many people do put decorative elements in bathrooms.
Personally, I'd like to have my grandma's plates up in my house but I'm not at all sure I do want to show them off to guests. I like them myself, besides their value as mementos, but I don't know how fashionable they are. I shall probably opt for the study over the bathroom, though.
