Surely they're installed to keep the crowds from spoiling the planting when they open for the NGS?

I remember a certain blue 'Royal Rope' that was placed as a barrier when Prince Charles was to open our student union building back in 1970.
As typical lefty students, this was the last thing we wanted, especially as the building had been opened by two others previously and we'd been using it for a year....
So, overnight, the Royal Rope vanished and the union jack was replaced by the largest pair of bloomers imaginable.:rotfl:
The college Principal called us together and pleaded for the return of the rope. They had another flag, but the rope was only on loan.
Being goody-two-shoes teacher-training students, we acquiesced and the rope was returned. Some of us even turned up to listen to HRH, but there were embarrassingly few for such an ostentatious barrier. I remember very little, except that he told us, rather patronisingly, to work and play hard. It was something that Mars did much more effectively in their adverts in about 1/100th of the time!0 -

Those lights are quite cute, but other than that what incredibly bland decor.0 -
