Update, iv not heard from Bt yet as i seem to never be around when they call. Had more letters, now one saying the debt has gone UP due to court and solicitor costs.
I don't understand how it's legal for someone to contact you and saying you owe them money without proof. Maybe i should get in the debt game and make some cash doing that!
Urgh, really don't know what to do now0 -
Clearly, this will not 'go away' so I suggest you try to get BT Company Representative involved by sending the full details to them via:
http://bt.custhelp.com/app/contact_email/c/4950Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
I've received a similar letter from when I lived at a different address which I left in february 2008. I haven't contact advantis, but I know I took my bt account when I moved to a new address so I don't understand how I would owe the any money?
Is it best to contact BT through the mse rep?0 -
I had a similar letter. Had great pleasure in prooving to them that I had in fact overpaid and requested BT send me a cheque for the outstanding. They were chasing a debt for when I left BT a couple of years ago. They couldnt supply the broadband service they promised when I moved house, and I even had an email from BT stating they were waivering all charges after my complaint letter. Realised when Advantis asked for proof that I had requested my bill to be amended due to them charging me in advance, and I never got it revised.0

I had another letter from Advantis again not giving me any details on my name other than initials and a former address no account numbers or anything. I contacted BT through their main switchboard and was put through to someone. I explained that I didn't have any account details other than my name and the previous address, the guy looked it up and said that there was no record of any outstanding payments, as I thought it should. I asked for this to be sent in a letter and email so I had something and he assured me that he would do it.
I contacted Advantis with this information and I'll see what happens, but I find it odd that the BT man couldn't explain why I had these letters from Advantis yet he assured me that I wouldn't be receiving anymore and to ignore them...
I really hope this isn't screwing up my credit rating, anyone think I should be doing anything more to get this sorted?0 -

This is the original post i posted here:
My father had broadband and phone through BT, he phoned BT to inform them he did not wish to renew the broadband with them last February but was not cut off until september/october. He was unaware that the broadband was still connected. He has now received a threatening letter from Collect Direct who have bought this debt. He did not sign any sort of contract or credit agreement as he was unaware it was still connected.
He was admitted to hospital in July and as he had not paid his phone bill the line was restricted to incoming calls only. When he returned from hospital he paid the bill so the line was reconnected, at this point he had enough of BT and informed them he no longer required their service. He has recently received a seperate bill again from collect direct demanding a sum of money that is greater than the monthly cost of what was left on the contract. Again no contract or credit agreement was ever signed.
Any help appreciated, thank you
This was resolved via the BT REP.
There has been some developments.....
At the beginning of August we received another letter from ADVANTIS CREDIT basically stating that my father now owes £176.40. This was settled back in April so i cant understand why this matter has now risen once again. Can anyone offer any advice on what we should do next?
Thanks in advance0 -

Hi
I need help. I received a letter from Advantis credit stating that i owed them £269.83 as i had an outstnading bt bill. I foolishly rang the number on the letter to investigate. When i finally got through i was told it was a bill from an old address. Now i have previously paid a debt collection company for an outstanding bt bill from that address so i was immediately suspicious. When i spoke to the guy at advantis he told me if i paid today he could halve the bill. I asked him for proof which he said he could get bt to send but if he did this then i would have to pay the full amount to advantis. When i got off the phone I decided to do some research on the company which led me here and have just seen everyone saying not to phone. Have i opened the door for them now? Any advise on next steps? I have got myself into debt in the past and have contacted all my creditors and made arrangements to repay which I have now settled and I'm all up to date. I'm worried about my credit as i've been working hard to repair it. Sigh, back to feeling under the cosh with my debts0
