Do the Banks pay up by cheque or not?

  • Hi!
I have just started the process of trying to get my money back from Barclays. I was just wandering that if I am rewarded, into what account will they credit the money! I have a £492 overdraft on current account with them which they are closing cos I defaulted on payments. I have another bank account with Halifax. This is my new current one of which I am managing alot better. If they put it in Barclays account then I won't get any of the money will I? Can they keep the money to pay off other things I owe them inc the overdraft?
  • I'll just pop your post into a thread about banks paying by cheque or into your account in a minute.

I would say they are more than likely to put the money into the account you have with Barclays, after all they will want your overdraft repaid, however I did see a post yesterday where someone put in a covering letter asking for a cheque and were sent a cheque.
  • yes they will automatically pay into your account(if it's still open) unless you specifically ask for the money in some other form.

All advice given by thekid is in good faith but remember these important facts:
    1. I'm lucky enough to live in Scotland(Scots Law may apply)...
    2. My motto is "What's the worst that can happen" you've seen the kids in the Comic Relief clips, is it to that scale? Then get a grip!
    3. It's only money...no really(see #2)
    4. I'm only a plumber...

My partner owes alot of money to halifax :( and he has had alot of late payment fee charges. We are going to find out the amount and try to claim them back. I was wondering though, will they give us a cheque? or perhaps offer to clear some of his debt to them? infact can we even claim the money back when he owes them some?

  • If my current account is officially closed but I am still paying off overdraft, will it then go into my new account with another bank if I request it to?
  • If you owe the bank money I would expect they will want their money back first.
  • Hi!
Sorry to keep bothering you. If it pays overdraft thats fine but can they use it to help pay my loan and credit card I have with them or does it deal with current account only?
    Sue
  • Your loan and credit card should be different agreements.

do you know if there is anyway I can find out about this for sure? i feel the debt is really there fault, since they put all the fees on it got too much for us to pay?
    any advice appreciated

I don't see the problem here. If the debt is the banks fault because of charges, what is the problem of reclaiming the charges and paying off the debt? This surely cancels itself out?
