Tesco self service tills

That's the thing apart from Xmas there is never more than 1 person in a queue in front of you at a manned till, but they usually have massive trolley fulls.

I am quite capable of using the self scanned tills but know I need approval for certain items so usually scan them first then continue with rest of shopping hoping that by the time I get to the end that SA appeared to approve.

The "unexpected item in bagging area" or "place item in bagging area" is very annoying. Some items weigh more than the till expects, apparently a problem with 50% + free items if they haven't updated till, or if an item is too light so it doesn't recognise it.

The City Centre store has at least 12 Self scan tills, if not more but only ever put one person on there. Now they have decided to remove carrier bags from these tills the problem is worse as people have to call the SA for a bag!

I wish we could do this, but at my Tesco, once an item is queried, it won't let you move on until the assistant has cleared it. Have a couple or more of those in your basket and it takes forever :D
  • It should be a maximum of six self sevice checkout to one operator. The other four would be closed if there was only one operator.

I think you mean that the other four should be closed if there was only one operator.
Go in to Tesco at Hookwood (near Gatwick airport), and you will see that this doesn't always happen, and there is often only 1 assistant irrespective of how many of the self service checkouts are open.

Make an official complaint so that it is brought to the managers attention. You can do this at customer service desk or https://www.tescocomments.com.

Approval for alcohol etc and removal of security boxes can be done any time prior to payment so you can carry on scanning but it is brought to the operators attention that you will need help soon. Some other descrepancies like wrong weight on the packing area do need to be carried out before you can continue scanning. So it's not a bad idea to scan alcohol early on in the transaction rather than at the end.

I am still waiting to find out how much Tesco et al are paying me to do their job for them.

Until then I will be using manned checkouts or not bothering.

Many of the Tesco tills have been upgraded to let you choose your own bag. They have done away with the bigger ones where you could put a trolley load of stuff through though. I never found the self-service ones quicker if you had a trolley full as you are slowed down with packing but if I had my DD with me then we would whizz through with one scanning and one packing.

Morrisons, only used once and never again. Horrendous. Asda I love because you can do cash back as well.

thanks, ive not used 1 for a few weeks so maybe in that the new ones are in place.

I argue back at them when forced to use them: "unexpected item in bagging area... yeah you didn't expect that bag did you"

I do try to refuse to use them wherever possible as they're only an excuse to cut jobs (and increase profits but not save money for us) - especially when they've got some one yelling at customers to go to them like our local store does which drives me potty - I'm a customer - not some animal to be barked at and herded.

Absolutely. The damn things just won't shut up. 'Please scan the next item. Please place the item in the bag. Please ...'

There's a technical term that academics use to describe that sort of thing, being 'economic growth'.

maybe the jobs have been diverted to other areas of the store, i personnally dont know as i dont work for a supermarket, but ive not seen a lack of staff once the self service tills have been in play
