I went to venice in December, and it was o.k but not half as pretty , romantic and exciting as I was expecting.Pretty dissapointing really! And everything was expensive when we got there, I only went for 3 days and was so ready to go home.If you do choose to go away on holiday check out some cheap flights on the flight checker on this site.In my opinion Amsterdam, Paris and Barcelona lived up to my expectations much more than venice. Also if you intend to visit any galleries or museums and your an organised sort of person, it is sometimes worth booking tickets before hand online to save hours of queueing(I wished I'd thought of this in venice, spent ages queueing, watching pre booked ticket holders going in).
I was 3 months pregnant on my 21st so my parents payed for me and partner to go to crete for a week for one last relaxing hoiliday. that was really nice, so you could always get hinting to your parents.
Hot air balloon ride sounds like a great fun exciting experience to share also.
oh yeah happy birthdays! and enjoy it as the next big one is 30!(scary eh!)0 -
A photo album of a picture of him at every year of his life.
Print out news articles which you should be able to find on t'internet, or search friendsreunited and get a reunion going.
Find out what his fave kids programme was and get a video of it (poundstretcher or charity shop.)
Cook him a cake. Most men like homemade fruit cakes;)
You could do your room up to look like another country, and save the real trips for when you can afford it.
Make him a chequebook of 'promises' for him to cash in when he wants to. This will only cost you the paper and ink.Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:

My lil sister's 18th birthday is coming up and I'm planning to do a slightly more complex version of sarahsaver's idea - a kind of 'this is your life' scrapbook! I'm going to write little anecdotes of things that have happened and photos but ask other family members and friends for ideas too - could you ask his family for that kind of thing - stories from when he was a kid and all that?
I like the idea of making your rooom up to look like another countryMight have to do that myself sometime for hubby!

Allders are closing down and doing a 40percent sale on "Red letter days" which include ballooning but I think it finishes this weekend."This site is addictive!"

Thanks, for the ideas.
We don't have an allders near us, but my mum looked in hers for me and they were sold out.
The problem with anykind of scrapbook is that I would pretty much have to rely on his parents. We get on really well but I don't want them thinking I'm moving in on their turf! They might want to do something like that, maybe I could offer it to them as an idea.0 -
If you did it as just your history with him you wouldn't have to involve his parents necessarily. One of my sister's friends did a scrapbook that was just 'i met you here, we became good friends here, also had contact here, these are our other friends' etc etc. Heres being school, guides and a youth orchestra
A family tree is something else to add in if anyone's doing these for family membersOurs is going to be horrendous - too many family members!!!

Thank you Sarahsaver for this idea! My daughter is soon to be 21 and we wanted something personal for her as well as a bit of jewellery. Am going to have a look through the photos tomorrow and will also try to get a nice photo album this weekend. Will be a bit like This is your Life! Our days are happier when we give people a bit of our heart rather than a piece of our mind.

how about planting a rare tree in your garden, local park, place you regularly walk together etc. Then over the years you can go back and picnic under it and remember all the lovely things that have happened to you

The simplest of things can be the most memorable.
If you want a chilled out birthday.....Instead of booking a holiday away find a nice little bed and breakfast somewhere in the country, it can either be local or the otherside of the country. Spend a weekend just enjoying each others company and relaxing. Small family run B&B's can start from as little as £12 per night.
