My brother paid around £50 to £100 a month less than you for a room in Zone 3 london and he only shared with 3 other people. They had a decent kitchen, bathroom, etc. Where in London do you live? Your house sounds horrible! You can still walk to central london from zone 3 - I've done it! Or a bus only costs £1.20 with an Oyster card.

So the reason you don't think it'll work is because basically the areas you have tried are expensive to live in and have reasonably high unemployment. Judging by the daily job roundup email I get, they're screaming for skilled people in my area because most of them migrated south.

Try looking anywhere north of the north south divide.

Here is a map to give you an idea where to look. You want to be looking in the green area.

Or perhaps you could expand your job search to ANY job instead of just in your field. 40hrs a week flipping burgers would give you enough to pay your rent. We have long since left the times where people can be picky as to what jobs they take.

I've said repeatedly that I'm looking for anything... as I have 25 year work history AND worked from the age of 6 years old!!!! (have you?) so I have done most work... why do people always assume that being out of work (well I'm working part time at the moment) for a couple of weeks means I'm fussy or knitpicking!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!? don't be so judgemental of others... it is not a crime to want to work in areas that you are skilled in... (I am also multi-skilled so it is not one area) that is the whole reason for education/skills in the first place!?

why would I want to move away from what friends I do have? maybe you are lucky enough to have friends and a base to come from ... I do not... I would like to not live in a random place at the age of 40 because there is a temporary recession on!?

London is not a nice place to live unless you have family/come from here etc but I value my friends that I have made here - I lived in London for nearly 20 years.. I tried swindon which is not an expensive place to live... I could do what my brother did... live in the middle of nowhere in wales and spent 15 years wasting his life in no-end jobs... got totally depressed and finally got out to live in the states (he married an american lady who he met online!!!) I'm not marrying someone over a temporary recession.

I am just looking to pay my rent for a short time period until I get more work... why do I have to leave my friends and go somewhere random? my life and contacts have to end for a month or two on the dole????????? seriously?

ps: I haven't migrated south... I come from the south originally.

Think your being restrictive with were you could move. I live in preston and for £500 a month you can get a large 3 bed terrace so a room only would be no more than £50 a week. A friend of mine rents a room out for 300 a month but that includes everything, bills, sky, broadband, toiletries etc.

There will always be somewhere cheaper/more economical to live than london.

Hope it works out soon and you find the right job.

    thanks.

    sounds great and a bargain!

am I allowed to say I don't want to move to Preston right now? I have no reason to go there.. .whereas I have friends in london... I like london! recessions don't last lifetimes.

cash jobs doesnt mean commiting fraud. Its called self declaration. You inform the tax office of your earnings in cash and work out how much you owe them.

I'm freelance so I do that anyway... well not earn cash but you know what I mean ;)
but on benefits you can't do that... you can work a certain amount of hours apparently... but I have to guarantee a job hours just to pay my rent is strange... as I say I hope this is just for a month or so... I've just never known anyone to have to contribute that much to their rent on benefits and I'm not living in a flat/house etc... just a room!!!

I am in zone 3 and I have 10 other people sharing the house!!

I moved in because there is a cleaner (still manages to be gross!) and being a student for the last 3 years I wanted to save money. the other places that were close to my course/job (I walk everywhere) were bloody awful! and I needed to move quickly.
they obviously cleaned the place when I viewed it... but what do you do? move out a week later? I hate moving... I think I'm past sharing... other people tend to think stealing your food/plates or not cleaning up after themselves etc is acceptable whereas I never touch other people stuff.. hence why I want a job soon so I can move to a studio/flat and keep it clean!!

I'm the type that pays for others so i don't think I can flip personalities...;) shame!
    I'm also not gay (I'm female :D)

I don't mind paying for myself... but in my attempt at finding out about the benefits/jobseekers system I have seemed to have discovered that I need to change my entire life in order to pay my rent via benefits for a month or two... bit drastic I think!!!

Can't you find a cheaper room? Yours sounds awfully expensive for what you're getting. A quick search on Gumtree finds some decent sounding things for around £60 pw. I know there are issues with raising the deposit, etc. Is there no one you could borrow a small amount of money from? Are crisis loans available for this sort of thing?

If you did odd jobs / gardening, say, I think you could easily earn £200 a week in cash and be better off than you are now. I've done it. Also, they say it's easier to get a job when you have a job. Remain unemployed for too long and you're at serious risk of losing your confidence & motivation and possibly even becoming depressed.

ETA: Forgot to say I'm in agreement with you about not leaving London (unless maybe you managed to get a job offer somewhere else).
