Ditto to all the wise words above - I work in a very deprived area and still find it hard to understand how the children think I am poor cos I only have one tv, yet I know some of them come to school having had no tea the night before and no breakfast as there is literally no food in the house and that dinner at school will be their only meal that day too.Be the change you want to see -with apologies to Gandhi

Different priorities. Different values........................ I work with similar children who think its very odd we have 1 TV and no Sky.:o
We've had what I assume are council tenants relocated from the more deprived area of the borough to where I live. Their children have the opportunity to attend a great school, get involved in Forest Schools etc and yet their attitude shows it all. Whilst attending the harvest festival that their kids were a part of these mothers sat there talking the whole way through, were playing on their phones and at one point moaning about how bored they were :eek::eek: Different values......different planet too, will spend £80 on a coat for their son in nursery and yet can't see the value in their kids education and experiences. One of them even termed it "all kippers and curtains" with regards to where I live <rollseyes>
maryb hits it right on the head with her post.......people didnt have much but they had their pride and did the very best they could with what they had.I have a gift for enraging people, but if I ever bore you it'll be with a knifeLouise Brooks

Interesting conversation today ladies, whilst we may not have huge amounts materially we are all rich in what really matters, love, family, friendship, a roof over our head and food for our bodies. Everything else is a bonus, over that which I am grateful for every day.
And to be able to choose to spend some of that bonus on helping children and others less fortunate than ourselves is helping us show DS about our values. With a bit of creativity, and squirreling away things throughout the year from sales etc we support a couple of Christmas things with toys and shoeboxes, and a local tin a week scheme that helps to feed the hungry all year round. He is only young but learning valuable lessons as to what is truly important in life, and is growing up to be a very uncommercial child. He saves his money, and often says he doesn't need anything - Father Christmas had a tear when an earnest boy said this last Christmas. But its true, he doesn't need anything, and he clearly understands the difference between wanting/liking and needing. He has carried on in this way all year so a small but much admired toy will have his name on come Christmas morning.
Oh dear, that was a bit of a sermon, sorry,

Maryb, you said so eloquently what I was attempting to articulate. Poverty comes in all forms. For me poverty is being denied an education. Most people can survive lack of money and often find ways to deal with it. Education is what helps to lift people from poverty. It is the children with parents described by Bitsy that I feel sorry for. However I also feel sorry for those parents because it is obvious to me that they are lacking in education. The way to turn them around is to find the one thing that will hook them into education and I doubt very much that harvest festival is going to do it for them somehow. Although I have no clue what would.
Yes very interesting conversation today.
Greenbee........... I am shocked that you only just joined quidco. Are you on Topcashback? I recently fell out with quidco as the third payment in a row has been declined. Oh well I am going to lower the level of the conversation and say my two icklies are now competing for who is sickest - both lying under a duvet on a sofa each, both moaning gently every time me or dh enter the room and both unable to move to even sip drinks - they are going to be fabulous teenagers as they have now both got grunting down to a fine art :rotfl:. Both are well on the mend tbh and fighting for best actor award! Being at work today was definitely the best option (dh has turned to drink as he has had them all day)Mortgage £119,533 going down slowly

I bought a tiny pumpkin and am going to attempt making a halloween thingy out of it. Any good advise what is the best way to cook the flesh? Roast/toast/boil and puree? Or could we have a halloween special in MFi3?"Everything will be alright in the end. If it's not alright, it's not the end."
