Yes I totally agree Joint accounts are good in that way.

I guess for me I just see the bad stuff that happens with joint accounts working in a bank so it kinda puts me off.

Things like husband racks up debt the other party is also liable for debt even thought they possibly aint spent a penny.

I know you see the bad stuff, but how many issues do you see compared to the number of joint accounts in your books?

Well to be honest you only really see it when theres dispute ie the account holders are going through divorce or something similar and it all turns sour ;)

Exactly, it won't be a problem till that happens.

Marriage won't be a problem till that happens either, make it illegal too.

O stop it now suited aces. You can't ban everything. But I agree with you, any young couple getting together now and living/buying a house/having kids should really consider what the marriage certificate actually GIVES them. The answer, to me, looks like nothing except massive hassle if they split. And 40% will do.

Then you are so blind it isn't funny. Marriage confers legal next of kin rights. It means that in the case of medical emergency your partner is your legal relative and allowed to be with you and be consulted about your care. It's one of the most important legal decisions the average person makes.

To be fair, that is a very very rare situation. 4 weeks of being unconscious is rare. I don't know anyone who has been unconscious for even a day. He may never regain it and die, its quite likely.

Something which you are quite honestly even blinder than I first thought. Over a life-time together the odds of at least one partner becoming seriously ill at some point are very high. We don't all stay in our 20s-40s forever. The older we get the more likely that we will end up with and unanticipated hospitalisation at some point.

You are completely focussed on what happens when a relationship ends. Other people are more focussed on what will make their relationship work for the rest of their lives, anticipating that their lives will at times be very difficult and ensuring that they are best prepared to come through it together. And I honestly do believe that with obvious exceptions, a couple who prioritises making their relationship work through all eventualities stand a far better chance of staying together. A couple where one or both individuals are keeping themselves prepared for not only a break-up, but a break-up where their partner fleeces them, are less committed and as such less likely to stay together for life.

for 13 or more years we've had 3 joint accounts...works well for us.
