You are a fool if you have a joint bank account.

They should be made illegal.

How many tales of woe have I read here of a breakup and then the other partner runs up huge debts and cleans out the account? HUNDREDS and still they come.....

I would not allow anyone access to my money willy nilly and I see it as just laziness, ignorance or financial naievety that people cannot run their lives using a bank account each and decide which bills each will pay from their own account.

When you break up and get fleeced by the other half, remember you read this post and chose to ignore it and not set up your own account. :rotfl::beer:

What a very silly post! There are plenty of reasons why people have joint accounts.
Why don't you return to your usual playground in the Moneysavers Arms Tomatoe? Where people don't care about how accurate your posts are? And where nobody needs helpful posts?

ETA: You see that's what happens when you feed trolls! (for instance Tod123 who's been having a lot of fun here) More and more come along and spoil a good forum :(

Your opinion means little to me but thanks. It is not silly to protect yourself from fraud/debt/homelessness caused by an ex partner who goes on a huge spending spree in YOUR name.
P.S I like it here so may stay.:)

What I have posted is correct and helpful to anyone about to begin life as part of a couple. I hope they give the matter some thought. They don't have to. Ignorance is bliss till it all goes wrong.

I have to say I think it's sensible to have some caution over accounts.

When my parents split up, their savings were in mum's name. She blew 20k in a year, while dad had to start completely from scratch.

Nobody wants to think that their relationship could turn so sour, but it can and does happen.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.
