Daughter off to camp...

  • Well my daughter came back from sea cadet camp today. She was back over a hour late so me and half a dozen parents were all sat outside the unit waiting for them. As usual she was first of the coach last to leave the unit
My darling daughter decided she only wanted pizza for tea as she had tons of sweets on the coach lol. Helped me unpack her suitcase all clothes soaking wet so now i have 10 loads of washing then she promptly fell asleep at 7pm. Not bad for a autistic girl who thinks sleep is a ooptional extra and something you only need to do when your mum has collasped in bed with exhaustion .If it is anything like last time she went i'll have 14hrs of peace and quiet while she sleeps She had a great time and learnt to capsize her boat and get it the right way up again and get back in it and got hit with the boom and she enjoyed herself so i'm really proud of her for going

    hi all

I have no experience of sea, air or army cadets but just wondered if it encourages them in any way to join the services as a career?

Do many who are in the youth / cadets go on to sign up?

I don't know anyone who has joined the forces without being in the cadets as a teenager, but most of those who I did know in the cadets have gone on to do other things. Engineering, teaching, shop work even joined the clergy!

They don't push joining the forces, but its a more clear career option if you've been in the cadets. But it all looks good on a CV/UCAS statement for anything else as well.

I have my little girl back! She's full of it and chattering about everything, she tells me she isn't tired at all but I'd bet good money she's flaked out by 10pm.
She's now sat adding the dozens of new friends she's made to her Facebook and I'm tackling the washing mountain she's bought back.

I did try and wash the personalised T Shirt they made for her but she won't part with it just yet....

(I will add she's called Eleanor, Bells is her nickname!)

    Thank you :p
The hair is a recent development...she's naturally blonde (albeit a dark blonde) and suddenly decided to go to red. It was a semi permanent colour and has faded back to a reddy brown now but its so thick as well its a nightmare to get into a bun.

They all gave each other jokey paper plate awards last night and she has the "Hows my hair?" award :rotfl:

She looks very happy indeed! One of my sisters is also called Eleanor, also fair-haired, and she went through a dyed-red-phase too.

well DS back safely from sennybridge, went friday morning, came back this evening.
He had a superb time, sleeping under canvas, walking miles with a heavy bergen on his back, eating rations and cooking on his hexi cooker. Did lots of field exercises.

He is absolutely filthy, still got camo paint on his face and everything is covered in mud... 2nd load in washing machine now... He hasn't stopped eating since he got home... says the rations were so good and they had so much he's now missing them.. Just eaten a roast dinner, loads of salad and cheese on toast... He's going to end up putting on all the weight he's lost over the weekend lol...

He enjoyed it so much he has announced he is going again in september for another weekend....

I think 'messy camp' for us is next month, proper tent and mud time I believe!

Glad he had a good time Sue!

Well, she's just returned from tonight's cadets waving a form for a weekend camp next month and one for another week this month, where apparently she can choose a specialism to focus on. She is incredibly excited about the prospect of a week on the rifle range so looks like she's off again!

As we are not planning a family holiday this year due to circumstances I'm actually very jealous that she can get a weeks entertainment and food doing something she loves for just £60.

In DS2's squadron, yes. He joined air cadets as soon as he was able to (the week to turned 13 :D) and is now 17 and a half. Most of his mates are either in the process of applying to join up or are already serving, including the girls.

A few years in cadets definitely gives them the edge when it comes to the services aptitude tests. The references the adult leaders give them are also tailored to HM forces applications unlike the references from school which tend to be more geared to uni applications.
