Daughter off to camp...

My son joined Air Cadets in January once he reached 13. He went on his first camp (RAF Linton on Ouse) with them last week and loved every minute of it. They were woken at 6am every morning, into the showers, then march to breakfast (full cooked), full days actiities i.e went for day trips, did an obstacle course, went on rifle range, did first powered flight and actually flew it. They were given packed lunches every day, full cooked meal in the evening and they had a club to go to in the evening. He made so many friends and they have kept in touch and are hoping to meet up again over the hols.
I was more nervous about him going away i.e looking after all his kit, keeping his stuff tidy etc etc (he doesn't do it at home), the sleeping quarters were imaculate, he even ironed his kit.....
I wouldn't worry about her, I'm sure she will have a wonderful time and it will be a great experience for her.pulliptears wrote: »Another reassuring post! RAF St Mawgan is their destination, pleased to hear your DS did fly as thats her main wish. Its nice to hear they have some freetime of an evening to socialise as well.....
I did a camp at St Mawgan back in the late '70s and it was exactly as welshsue describes, other things I remember were helping out on the station radio station and finding a pub in Newquay that would serve a gang of 15 year olds. She'll have a fine time so don't worry0 -
I have finally had a phone call! Lol Only because she couldn't recall how to use the magic hair bun thingummy I had bought for her to make life easier when styling her hair.
It was a garbled conversation which consisted of me explaining how to use it, asking if she was having a good time and her replying "Can't talk, I'm going shooting now, Love you bye!". I assume this meant that yes, she was having a good time!0 -

Sounds as if she's having a great time!...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0

glad she was having a good time. My DS has gone off to Sennybridge this morning. He is sooo lucky, went to Linton the first week of school hols now off again to camp.
Mind you he won't have any of the luxuries of the RAF base this weekend, he will be under canvas, in the field and living off rations. Don't know how we managed to get everything into the bergen but did it. Put it on the scales and it weighed 12kgs, I couldn't even lift it so don't envy him marching with it on his back.
Expecting a very dirty, very tired but very happy son when he comes back on sunday evening.0 -
My son was in the Air Training Corps (The Air Cadets) and it was the best thing he ever did. He loved it, they ran off his puppy fat, he learned how to cook, iron and put up a tent and had loads and loads of fun camping, yomping and flying. He also got his Duke Of Edinburgh's award.
I'd highly recommend it.
He still uses his tent-putting-up skills at festivals and is usually in great demand!"If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0 -
I dont know about living off rations, but they do eat in the Junior Ranks (JR's) mess.
St Mawgan camp is in the middle of no where, out of the main gate is a small camp site then a 1/4 mile walk to the main road where you can catch a bus into Newquay. The airfield is shared with Newquay Airport. Not alot on camp, 1x shop, 1x bowling alley/gym complex. There was a cinema which was free. Dont worry about tents, im sure they will be in the accomodation as its pretty quiet there now.
They might have some tutors down there for air-experience flights, though unsure if this is still going off after past events.

She's had a ball! Had a phone call to say she was coming home late tomorrow. She's flown a plane all by herself for 25 minutes she tells me and gained a marksman badge.
She did say she is completely shattered and will probably sleep until Monday lol. She also asked if she could do a weekend camp locally next month! talk about keen hehe
I feel so relieved that she's enjoyed it, but I can't wait to give her a cuddle now.0
