Oh Hun hope he gets well soon! Seems this flying bug is contagious lol.

Had a text from DD, she's there, unpacked and enjoying the Sunshine with her friend. Easy day for them today I think with the main activities coming tomorrow. Looks like it's going to be a glorious week in Cornwall as well!

My middle daughter was an Air Cadet. Until then I'd struggled to find anything that she was interested in for more than a week, but she adored it. It taught her to iron, to clean her shoes until they gleamed, to care for her uniform (ie clothes!), and as she got promoted through the ranks she learnt leadership skills to prepare her for when she became an exceptionally young manager. She also learned to fly a powered glider, went up in a whole series of planes, learnt how to drill, (!!), and respond to orders... i could go on and on, but cannot praise the training for life ahead that it gave her.

Oh, and she loved camp too!
  • It's 10 for Sea Cadets. I have 3 boys aged 10, 11 & (just) 13 & they arrived home last night after a week away in Weymouth with SC. They absolutely loved it. They did kayaking & sailing, early mornings, late nights (I'm paying for that now!) & had a great time.

Just as important ;), DH & I had a whole week of peace & quiet, with a tidy house! :D

We pay £1.50 per session each week (2.5 hrs) - great value. My 13 yo goes twice a week. The trip away was only £85 each - amazing value.

The boys enjoy the discipline (cubs, scouts & boys brigade all tried in the past & not enjoyed due to lack of rules & regs).

I have seen a real change in my boys since they started (for the better). They have a real interest & keenness for something (other than their computer games )

    We love Sea Cadets :T:T:T
I'm not so tired & not so desperate..... mainly thanks to MSE :D so just call me Notso.....
Yes, I'm juggling and I might drop some.... but at least I'm trying ;)

Hi - I'm a detachment commander in the Army cadets, for about 25-30 teenagers. I'm glad a lot of people mentioned the discipline side of things because that's one thing we do try and work on, along with respect for others, teamwork and confidence. It has the added bonus of giving kids something else to do rather than hanging about the streets.

Our motto is: 'To Inspire to Achieve'
Thanks though, I know of nobody thats been on one of these camps before so its all reassuring.

I've done 10 of them, as either a cadet or adult instructor. She will have a fantastic time, don't expect her to write...most mums will be lucky to get a quick text in the evening lol. They will be busy from 6am until 6pm.

they have to be 13 and can stay in the Air Cadets up to 21. Not sure about other Cadets but DD's fire guns, fly, play sports, camp, parade etc as well as doing the Duke of Edinburgh which is a brilliant scheme anyway.

Joining age for Army Cadets is 12 and in secondary education :)

  • I was an army Cadet. Loved it! I had been a girl guide, and just got so bored making peppermint creams. My cousins were all in cadets so I joined...and I was the only girl in my detachment. They had to hastily clean out the spare loo they'd been using as a store cupboard!

I did DofE through them, and first aid training, and learnt so much - I ended up as an adult instructor, later on.

In my mid twenties I trained as a teacher and I got an interview (and the job) for the first school I applied to. I'd put on my application "trained to teach Art, English and Weapons Handling" and they told me they'd HAD to invite me for interview just to ask me about that...!

She'll love it. Some people worried it'd make me all gung-ho but I got to meet lots of serving soldiers and it helped me decide that a career in the army wasn't for me.

Army Cadets sounds fab for big little people! DS is only 5yo atm, but have him on the waiting list for beavers/cubs/scouts - massive waiting list though :(

Fingers crossed he will want to do army cadets too once he is old enough!
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

    I'm excited now!! haha

DD was, until 3 months ago the most unmotivated dreamer in the world lol. Dont get me wrong she did well at school, but at home was in a world of her own. Her room was always a mess, she couldn't get up in a morning to save her life and she was actually quite a shy girl.

She's still quite shy and bookish, but she loves cadet nights and I'm slowly seeing her become more organised. She has ambitions to complete the DofE and rise through Cadet ranks as well.

All she's talked about all week is the possibility of them flying next week.
Did she get off okay? It is lovely to see them blossoming this way. My son seemed to lose his way a little bit and not interested in his hobbies anymore. He joined Sea Cadets, found his purpose and taken them all up again. The change in him has been dramatic - really bringing my boy back out of his shell.

I was in the Air Cadets for over 10 years, joined at 13 and become an Adult Instructor. Although my real career has taken over now and I left a few years ago I loved it all and miss it even now. I worked through the ranks like your daughter wishes to and become a Cadet Warrant Officer which gave me great skills which have seen me rise through ranks in my current career. Your daughter will love camp. I must say I was a little home sick when on camp the first time at RAF Cranwell however the older Cadets looked after me very well.
  • My daughter is a sea cadet and is age 13 .She went away for the first time in May with cadets to Raliegh and the first thing she did when she got of the bus at the unit to come home was give me a letter about the next camp. She has just gone now to Crosby till Friday Her suitcase was heavy so she asked me to take it unit for her she shouted bye and was gone I asked before she left the house 'would she miss me ' all i got back was 'it's to much fun and i'm to busy to miss you'
I think going to cadets is the making off her. She has autisim and finds mixing quite difficult at school and doesn't have many friends now she has loads when she goes there. When i drop her at unit she always runs in and is always one of the last out and is still gossipping all the way to the car with her mates
