okay i have narrowed down my seach to 2 BB providers for my Dad.
-Metronet - he will be a low data user. I am with MN & happy with the simple service.
-Talk Talk - he already has calls with them, so far service is okay and better customer srvice than onetel. Can i refer him again to get another referral fee? (it asks on the sign up page for a voucher!)
decided not to bother with virgin BB, as not sure on customer service.
Open to any other suggestions, aim is to get BB for under £20/mth inc hardware and connection. Plan to order by close tommorow.0 -
Looking to get BB for the first time. No past experience. Is it better to get a USB or PCI modem?
Anybody know what a ping time is?

Ping time is the length of time to get a signal back after you have sent one out. A bounce-back time. Lower the ping the better.0

I was going to get virgin broadband for my dad, but read on some websites that there customer service is cr*p. So was going to try Talk Talk , but they estimate 2 weeks to activate a line..slow or what.
Did consider metronety, but £70 activation fee, put me off. So looked at wanadoo and Bt broadband at £17.99.
Went for the later, with £13 cashback at greasypalm.
Bt broadband basic, is easy to sign up, but they charge an extra £1/mth giving a fee of £18.99 if no direct debit is signe dup...no idea how to do that. As usual BT its very confusing to use. Anyway good thing is they give a choice of activation date, so signed up just now, with date set for next friday.0 -
"Is it better to get a USB or PCI modem?"
Actually it's well worth spending around 45 to 50 quid on a router. Benefits -
fast
you can put on more pc's so easily share the broadband
best of all is security - you get a hard firewall so you can control acess to your computers open ports. Add in a software firewall too and you are reasonably secure. My website has lots of info and photos from various Greek and Canary Islands esp. about walking. My profile has the site address cos not allowed to put it here.0 -
I agree with FangKat - I bought a corega wireless adsl router for about £65 new (They often are sold secondhand on ebay for £50) and it is really great - gives me wireless connection around the house (and garden !!) with a firewall too.To infinity and beyond!0

Hi,
Thanks for the reply re: first time broadband user.
Been looking into it in more detail and i'm thinking about getting either Wanadoo or BT broadband wireless as we have 2 computers in the house.
Wanadoo charge £80 for the wireless capability, not sure about the price for BT yet.
Am i able to use wanadoo broadband and then connect my own wireless adaptor (bought cheaper from Ebay) to have wireless capability, or not? Or will i have to buy Wanadoo's wireless package?
Thanks again.0 -
