I used to use NTL broadband @ £24.99/month. 3 months ago I changed to plusnet (https://www.plus.net) who charge £14.99/month for 1Mb speed (not the standard 512Kb). You are limited to 1Gb data transfer, but from one who surfs the web a few hours/day and gets e-mails, this is ample. If you do go over the 1Gb you can pay extra for the next Gb (£2.00 automatically) or pay extra (£1.75 I think) in advance. You can also monitor your usage easily from the plusnet website.
The only drawback is that you have to pay for line activation at the start which is approx £60 and for an ADSL modem, approx £40. If you already have ADSL with another ISP then you can switch over for nothing and most ISPs that have supplied a modem let you keep it. If anyone out there does decide to use plusnet, then please use me as the person who referred you(prais.plus.com) as for everyone that I refer I get a discount off my monthly charge every month while you are signed up. This will also apply to you if you end up introducing people (60 people and it won't cost you a penny each month). Totally free broadband internet.0 -
First time on so if I've done it wrong - sorry!
Can anybody advise the best business broadband provider?
Is the BT offering reasonable as a package?
Thanks0 -
New e7even deal is not quite as good as the last - but might be good for those wanting to transfer Sign-up to any broadband package between Tuesday the 2nd November and Midnight on Thursday the 4th November 2004, and get connected for FREE!! (RRP: £50)To infinity and beyond!0

Plusnet, £14.99/month, 1 Mb, limit 1Gb, not cut off if you exceed. Not suitable for everyone I appreciate, but certainly suits me. Worth looking at for light users. Lots of interesting free extras. The moving finger, having writ, moved on.0

Well today I signed my mother up for broadband after much deliberation. She is not a heavy user (I would never refer to her in that way for fear of "a good clip round the ear"
) As she is moving from dialup to broadband, the best deal I could find was (God forgive me) Wannado. They offer a free USB broadband modem and ADSL splitter, free connection fee, a 1Mbps service capped at 2Gb/month @ £17.99/month inc VAT. It has a 12 month contract. Although this might sound expensive, over the first 12 month period, allowing a meagre £25 inc VAT + delivery for a USB ADSL modem & splitter, it is cheaper for her than signing up for Metronet's excellent value service (even assuming she only used their "free" limit of 200Mb/month). On this basis, total "up & running cost" is £215.88 for the first year with Wannado 1Mbps and £236.06 for Metronet PayGo500. Assuming the charges stay the same, in the second year: Wannado would still cost £236.06 and Metronet would cost £141 - also assuming the monthly limits of 2Gb and 200Mb respectively are not exceeded or changed.
So I have set my mother up with a Yahoo email account. It works with POP3, so can be integrated into Outlook Express. Best of all it is free - and fully independent of service provider. In one year's time I will look for the current best deal for my mother and switch ISP accordingly.
I have no experience of Wannado. I do have experience of Metronet, as I signed my brother up with them - they are great value. I know there are some almost infeasibly cheap providers around at the moment like adsl4less, efhbroadband, e7even etc. But how long can they continue to be commercially viable? At the moment, selecting a broadband ISP is not as easy as selecting a dialup ISP - you cannot simply load a CDROM and customise your computer, as the connection is controlled at the exchange instead of the dialling end. When/if this changes, we can shop around at will.
I would be very interested to read MoneySavers comments, as getting the best deal is always on my mind.

Agree with you. I wish to sighn my dad up to BB, was thinking first of Metronet..great service and supprt but paythe £59 connection fee and buying a modem around £25 has put me off. Although there monthly fee is low fo rlow users, i sometimes think it is better to pay an in one fee. Is Wanadoo the best deal for this?0 -
Talk Talk (part of the Carphone Warehouse) are offering unlimited broadband at £19.95 a month and, if you sign up this month, you get a year's subscription to their free evening and weekend phone call plan which gives free calls to all land lines in the UK AND in the USA and Canada and Australia!
Isn't that a bit of a bargain? How much do you spend on phone calls? For an extra fiver you get free calls all day every day, tho' I don't know if that includes overseas ones.
