  • Have been with Virgin.net for Broadband at £24.99 a month. Was going to switch to to metronet and had to ring to get a tranfer ref number. Got an e-mail back offering me virgin service at £19.99, rang up to switch and they then offered me the better rate of £17.99. No hassle and no contract. Worth a try. :)

  • I have been with Tiscali for over a year and they do seem to be good value at £20< for approx 589 Kh. However their customer service department is in the Indian subcontinent and communication can be a strain. When I moved house it took me 3 phone calls and 30 days to get re-connected. Admittedly that was mostly to do with the 'industry agreement' to give all providers 10 days notice of change. BT has a strangle hold on this and Tiscali could not do anything before my move date as BT controlled my new number.

THe accounts department for Tiscali is in the uk and all my communications with them have been fine. Their standard letters don't seem to reflect any conversations and agreements, which is confusing and frustrating.

Am I right in thinking Tiscali is the cheapest broadband for the speed that I am getting??
  • My ISP seems to be offering a great deal on broadband and has not been mentioned - Plusnet https://www.plus.net

The prices start at £14.99 for a standard 512k connection (this has a 1gb/month limit but is only £1.50/gb extra if you excede that.)

The best value seems to be their high speed 2mb connections at only £19.99 / month (this has a 2gb/month limit), great for most peoples uses unless you're downloading videos etc!

Plus.net also offer a 24/7 0845 customer support, full feature ISP services such as POP3 email, free fax-email service, online control panel, and even a free .co.uk domain name.

I've had several ISPs over the years and Plus comes tops!

has anybody tried asking metronet for a discount or some incentive to stay with them? they may be cheaper than most other prociders, but iwoukld have thought they would do some extra incnetive to remain competitive.
  • Hi Forum.

I’m moving into a student house with 5 others and we're looking at having a broadband package for the house (maybe with a TV and phone package thrown in).

I’ve seen a couple of student offers from the likes of NTL but they seem to be quite expensive and they try to soften us up with a free XBOX! (Not free looking at the T&C).

Does anyone have any ideas cos it’s getting close to the new term.

    Thanks, Peter
  • I will recommend plusnet any time
have been with them for months now and never any problem. The new £14.99 for 1 meg package (1GB limit) is very good value for money.
service is excellent and response to enquiries is very prompt

As I said in my earlier e-mail I had been investigating broadband providers for sooooooooo long and the three I had come down to were E7even, Plus.net, and Metronet.

All three had pro's and cons regarding the make up of their offering but all three came out well in comparison to others (not saying there wasn't better but, these were my opinions) based on research with ISPReveiw and ADSLGuide, so........ Yeay Plus.net I think I would have gone with them if the E7even deal wasn't just so god damn good. ;D

  • ??? since we, in this part of the uk, have not been allowed the delights of Broadband (but have jealously read some of the ability the system gives in regard to speedy downloads etc). But we learned, just a short while ago, that it "Is to Arrive" around the middle of October .There will be street parties drunken revelry and general merry making ho Hum!!! So to the point :-
Am I correct in understanding that by joining the Broadband setup (With BT) the fee that is charged will mean that for my £30 or whatever it means that I shall NOT have to pay for the BT line as well ? .
Also I read the responses to Martins Cheapest Broadband article and see that most recommend whoever they feel is tops but very few, if any have anything to say about BT. Any Offers as to why ? Many Thanks in anticipation. Ps I DO NOT Work for BT but they have been my ISP for years.

You have to pay the line rental for your BT line in addition to the monthly fee for ADSL.

BT are mentioned less, simply as they are not the cheapest.

I was a BT dialup and ADSL customer and never had any real problems with the service - its was just cheaper in the end to change to someone else when I wanted a 2MB service

If you are happy with BT Internet/Yahoo and want to keep your email address etc - use BT Yahoo for ADSL (not BT Broadband which is slightly different)

Just be aware you will be paying a few pounds more than the cheapest each month..

Also some people think BT isn't "good" at being an ISP as its not their main business but if you are happy with their reliability..

    Regards
    Sunil
  • :-/Thank you SUNIL I am not particularly enamoured of BT, it's just the thought of all the hassle of change. I am actually with BTyahoo, as its called now, as a short while ago we were given Hobsons choice, we could !!choose ?? Btopenworld or go to btYahoo, frankly its a pain in the posterior so perhaps I will go elswhere . Decision Decisions Thanks again for you help.
