Nice to see the comments about last night's programme. Lil_Me - yes, it was very interesting to take part in this, one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had (believe it or not!). Addiscomber - it was 5kg of raw veg and fruit per person, per day at a cost of £15 per head. Only one or two people actually managed to eat the whole lot and they never did it more than once! The first day or so was spent doing nothing but chew and chronic jaw ache meant we were all down to the local shop in Paignton buying camping knives to start chopping and mixing the stuff up. Made for a lot easier chewing and swallowing and more pleasant to eat! The 'loo' trips weren't half as bad as I expected. The first few days we were a little more errhmm frequent but after day 4 it was all back to normal. This diet was designed for the programme only, it is an extreme diet and you couldn't live with it (unless of course you had no job, kids, home to clean etc.). I now follow a low GI diet and still feel much healthier and have more energy. The diet taught us that eating three meals a day is a social thing not a body requirement - we were much better of grazing on the food as and when we wanted it. The only problem we had was days out (i.e. the fishing trip) and we needed a big rucksack to take enough food out for the day. I always knew fruit and veg were good for you - I just didn't realise how much!:j0

Can't really take to them myself.
That show really pointed up to me the fact that I simply do not eat enough fruit and veg but I could never munch through that lot in a day as Addiscomber says - not really practical but I will try a little harder. I also need more water my daughter (nurse) says I'm permanently dehydrated and tells me wine, lager and Baileys just doesn't do the job:o but I like them:T:rotfl:Women and cats will do as they please and men and dogs should get used to it.;)

I know we should all be eating more fruit and veg and I for one will try, but not sure about the raw veg. It does seem to have great benefits so I am going to give it a try at weekend (not too much though). I love broccoli and cauliflower but have never tried them uncooked.
Raw brocolli and cauliflower not much fun on their own ...... best cut into tiny florets and added to a salad. (Also found out that peacocks quite like these raw too .... just a shame they wouldn't eat more of mine!).0 -
Becs after watching what you all went through, having to eat that lot a day, you have my complete admiration. I love my fruit and veg but couldn't have done it I don't think, not that much raw. Well done with the cholestrol reduction and having the determination to get through that, brilliant. Sleeping with all those animals around must have been noisey. Fishing trip looked great aswell of course. Isn't feeding the peacocks cheating! :rotfl: I think I would have fed every animal I could find. I don't know which one you were of course, but everyone did so well, I found it an amazing fascinating programme and did learn huge amount from it.
I've just been having a look through the website for it http://www.bbc.co.uk/sn/humanbody/truthaboutfood/One day I might be more organised...........

I thought the part where they sent a camera down the mans colon was impressive! It looked very clean, kind of confirms the myth that we need irragations to help with impacted stuff!
And the bit about pro biotic yoghurts not being as good as fresh veg... well i'd have loved to have seen the tests done with homemade yoghurt, bursting with good bacteria!0 -

I thought the programme was excellent. However, you can't really draw any proper conclusions from the experiment because:
a) most people don't eat raw food
b) most people won't eat that quantity of fruit/veg
So the results that were measured could have been down to eating the fruit/veg raw. If the fruit/veg had been cooked, what would the results have been? What if they'd had 'normal' sized portions for the same period?
My understanding from talking to the medical professionals/nutritionists involved is this - the idea of the experiment was to show the powerful effect diet can have on our health in a way that was so stunning it really hammered the message home. Diets for lowering cholesterol (fruit and veg but more tuned to our busy lifestyles and eating preferences) do exist but they also take three months to achieve the results we got in 12 days. I have to say that it was very easy to do the diet there but I would not have been able to do it even for a day if I had been at home. There were plenty of new and exciting things going on around you to keep your mind off the chips (living in a zoo is amazing), the food was weighed and delivered to your tent (no effort involved), no work/housework/kids/husband to worry about, the weather is beautiful, the people you are with are great fun ......0 -
I found this program very interesting My husband has very high cholesterol. so I found the garlic part very interesting. Im going to buy some garlic capsles and try and use a bit more raw garlic in his diet.0
