Yes, I'm just back from my first shift and so far so good.

Most of the customers are very polite and waited patiently as I fumbled with the till.

Lottery tickets are the worst part.

But it's friendly and warm and not such a bad place to spend the morning - does feel a bit silly to be doing it when I've got such a backlog of 'real' work though. Better get my head down now.

well done on the first morning. You may find that something that is relatively undemanding can be a great tonic! And being more positive will put you in a better frame of mind to do your 'real' work

Glad that your first morning went well, and hope that you are able to get on with some other work this afternoon.

I got paid this morning for my three day's toil at the post office - £54 - there is something very satisfying about being paid in cash!

As a bonus I got home to find the house unbelievably tidy. A colleague of OH's rang this morning and announced he was calling round, which spurred OH and DD1 (who is off school ill) into a housework frenzy. So downstairs looks like just a normally untidy house, instead of a fetid Steptoesque dump. The funny thing is, when the colleague arrived, he walked straight through the house and followed OH out to the shed, which they hadn't thought to tidy. Ha ha!

Progress all round then! Did you enjoy your work at the shop?

    Any plans for the weekend?

Thanks hypno. The shop work is OK. The novelty factor makes it interesting, and for a nosy person like me it's nice to observe people from this new angle. You certainly get all sorts in there.

However I can't really get away from thinking it's a really stupid thing to earn £6/hour serving in a shop when I've got £25/hour work sitting on my computer at home.

I'm taking the view that working in the shop is a way of sending a message to the universe that I'm ready to do something different. Also, it's definitely helping the shopkeepers, as Mrs Shopkeeper has recently had an operation and needs to rest, and while 3 hours in the morning a few times a week is not as much rest as she needs, it is better than nothing.

And did you enjoy your work at the prison?

Plans for the weekend..... take the kids Christmas shopping.... and try to avoid spending much myself. Then on Sunday I have to run a three mile race. Eek!!! I expect to come last.

Yes, the prison is very interesting to say the least! I am sure I am going to like it there when I can get stuck in properly.

Good luck with the race - one thing I recall from my running (well, plodding) days is that you often get a prize for coming last. Those that come in the top three get a poxy trophy that clutters the place up......those that come last often get something alcoholic.........:D (been there....done that!)

I hope you have a good weekend - ours is taken up with working and skiing.....no change there, then!!

ooh - good luck in the race!

OH says similar about surveys - hecan't understand why I bother - when my work pays so much more per hour than doing the surveys. But it's all extra money and it also focuses you more (hopefully) when you are doing other work and it is something a bit different which is always a good thing :) Also it's cash now which is always a good thing with Christmas spending! :D
