Urgh, I spoke too soon - they have asked me to check every reference (there are ten pages of them) to ensure the right reference matches the citation in the text.

I'm not really worried about the so-called credit crunch - but perhaps my head is in the sand. I seem to be on a different economic trajectory from the rest of the world anyway - I've never prospered in the boom periods so don't expect to be hard hit by banking collapses etc.

A lot of my clients are charities, and I read that 30% of UK charities have made redundancies recently because of fundraising shortfalls. But does that mean they will need freelancers less or more?

I worry more about other factors causing my work to dry up. Like getting older (i'm easily ten years older than my clients) - my knowledge getting out of date etc.

Freelancers are cheap, compared to having someone in the office, so I guess that's a bit of insurance for us! A few years after I left the publisher I worked for, they made practically everyone in my old department redundant, but I'm still getting a steady stream of work from them - they still need someone who understands the projects to help them out!

One thing that does puzzle me is what will happen in the future - I learnt practically all my skills on the job, mainly because my line manager was very very particular about the standard of the books that went through, and money wasn't always the main priority. But now everything is freelanced out, and standards are much lower beause speed/money are all that matters, and so the editors coming through won't have that training, so I can only see standards getting lower and lower. I guess that's what it feels like getting old!

Yay! We reliable freelancers are worth our weight in gold. I often think my clients hire me because they know I will get the job done and save them having to deal with all the tricky bits themselves. I am sure there will always we work for us, credit crunch or no!

hi Seax good to hear that you are making some money and that Oh is doing his bit too. Just remember before you started being more motivated, that piece of work that was only half a day late, would have been days, or even a week late. So you are doing better at deadlines :D

I am plowing through all of the paperwork needed to stay here. Found out that it takes 12 -15 months to get the residencey bit, so now I have to fill in a form to extend my visitors visa on top sigh.

Saturday night so I'm settling down to do a few hours work. The joys of being skint.

We're putting a few bits and pieces on ebay this weekend while listing is free. That's been distracting me from the £25/hour work I have waiting to be done, I must get my priorities sorted out. I've got 3 items ending this weekend too, all have watchers, one has 24! So I hope to get about £100.

OH is on good form. He spent a day with two of his brothers this week and it's had a tonic effect in that they are such grumpy old curmudgeons he has resolved not to be like them. And he's been all sweetness and light ever since.

A payment has just gone out on my big loan. Only 48 to go. Four more years with this huge millstone round my neck. I've been paying it for 3 years already.

Good news on OH - I hope it lasts for you.

£100 would be a good amount to get on ebay - if I had anything that could fetch that much (even combined totals!) I would probably be tempted to list too! But I haven't, so I'm not :o

As for the loan - well you will soon be half way, and then you are on the way home!

Oh, and another positive - at least your big loan is on a reasonable rate.......my biggest loan is on 24.9% with no ability to pay early

Now, go and amend your signature to reflect the new loan payment coming out, and make yourself feel better xx
