Hi Lucielle, he didn't get the paperwork done in time to get paid in September, not entirely his fault as the relevant staff weren't around when he was in college. Term has now started so there should be no problem for getting paid in October!

Hi Seaxwyn.....your friends idea sounds good.Maybe have a set time each day that you work no matter what as though your an in an office. Then the routine may kick in and you'll find it easier...I feel for you as I'm terrible for deviating from what I'm meant to be doing.
Great to hear that you have enough to pay the bills this month so that's something to work from.Hope you're having a good day x

hullooo folks. Thanks for the ideas. OH is usually resistant to my suggestions and I can't see mystery shopping or AQA appealing to him. But the kids will love to do youngpoll surveys, thanks for the suggestion.

Sit OH down, remind him of the tax bill that is coming in January and then take him to sign up. I would imagine he would like the restaurant ones etc. And for AQA you could appeal to his male vanity, ie I bet you would be really good at it with your vast general knowledge.

This is all part of stepping up to the plate and supporting you. If he doesn't like the suggestions YOU have for making money, THEN HE HAS TO MAKE MONEY FROM HIS IDEAS. Grrrr on your behalf

Thanks Chev. He is actually pulling his weight in other ways - doing a lot of gardening for a neighbour at £12.50 an hour and also driving a minibus in between teaching. I will investigate mystery shopping - for both of us. I've never done it before as my main issue is trying to keep myself sat at my desk and working!

I'm not convinced by mystery shopping - I had a look at it before, and I ended up spending a lot of time on it for very little money. I tried & gave up AQA for the same reason. I think your 'proper' work is much more lucrative.

Is getting your OH involved in your work an option at all (or too much of a nightmare even to think about !!) I often end up doing a lot of repetitive stuff when I'm editing, and it would be great to have someone else do some of that for me. My OH woud be able to help me, but the problem is he's too bossy and would try to take over, and he's got a full time job which pays better than my hourly rate, so when he's at home he needs his rest.

Hi Tyllwyd! I do sometimes get OH involved in my work, particularly things involving photos and design work. He's also brilliant at coming up with headings and stuff like that. But most of my work requires a certain amount of knowledge of the subject matter and I wouldn't dare let him do it as I'd have to check every word.

I feel rather the same about mystery shopping, AQA etc. In theory, I can earn £25/hour and more just sitting at my desk, so the last thing I need is even more distractions.

I've had a rush of good commissions come in in the last week, I really am very lucky. Hope your work is going well too?

Work is going well in that there's lots of it - problem is, I'm so paranoid at the moment with all the bad news around, I've said yes to everything and I am panicking a bit whether I'll be able to get it all done in time.Trouble is, it's all come from different places and there is always a good reason why I didn't want to turn it down (repeat work that comes up several times a year, an editor I've not worked for in a while, or someone that is a good contact, etc etc). I think probably my work is shorter time-scales than yours - I usually get a few days notice of something they need me to turn around within a couple of weeks, so it is always difficult to judge. And on average I usually expect a few jobs to get delayed/never turn up, but that hasn't happened recently!

And I've got my five year old little girl at home with an ear infection - all sorted with some antibiotics now, but still I lost a lot of sleep on Wednesday night, and time at the gp, which all has to be made up somehow!

Quick update for the 1st of the month. Today's debt total is £1170 less than on 1st September - woo hoo!

I hope that we are entering an easier six months now that the long summer holiday is over and OH is teaching again. Now I really do have to face up to the tax bill and start bringing in money every which way I can.
