I've got an annoying dilemma. I was going to go to London Zoo tomorrow - this is a work jolly with one of the teams I work with regularly. We were meeting up for a pub lunch, then taking a boat from Camden to the Zoo.
Now I have an email from the author of that Bolivian Forestry PhD I was editing asking if I can do another chapter - but she can't send it til tonight and it has to be submitted on Friday. In other words, editing has to take place on Thursday.
So I can turn it down and go to the Zoo, or turn down the Zoo trip and earn £25/hour editing this darn thesis. As I type it I know I should do the work. But how very very annoying.Total debt: 1 January 2007 £[strike]49,387.79[/strike] 1 January 2012 £[STRIKE]19,312.85[/STRIKE] 1 August 2012 £11,517.620 -
although it would mean long hours of working, is there no way you can do both - yes, it would mean working late through the night or whatever, but it would allow you to go to the zoo tomorrow and still earn some money.
I know back to back working is not ideal, but on occasion it can pay off.
Of course there may be too much editing to do that....but worth a thought!Successful women can still have their feet on the ground. They just wear better shoes. (Maud Van de Venne)Life begins at the end of your comfort zone (Neale Donald Walsch)0 -
I hadn't thought of that. I guess I could postpone the decision until the chapter arrives tonight, and see how much there is. Thank you!Total debt: 1 January 2007 £[strike]49,387.79[/strike] 1 January 2012 £[STRIKE]19,312.85[/STRIKE] 1 August 2012 £11,517.620

Urgh bloomin Bolivian forestry, it's still going on.... I got up early to be sure to finish it this morning. But you'll never guess what. We went round for drinks at a neighbour's last night and I had a fascinating conversation about Bolivian forestry with one of the DDs' friends' dads. I think he was well impressed by my command of the detail!

Chev, my friends are moving to a small town in the north of South Island. I can't think of the name, I will find out and let you know. Remind me where you are.
Not very near then we are north of Auckland about 40km.
hope you are doing ok. Where exactly in the north of South Island. There has been MAJOR flooding and land slips there the last couple of days - one town was cut off because all the roads had land slips on, plus another village was evacuated due to flood risk.

Good potential solution there to the zoo/editing dilemma- hope it works out for you, Seaxwyn, the jolly sounds nice.2023: the year I get to buy a car0

I agree with Hypnos idea to see how much editing there is first and then make your deciscion.0

It turns out that the zoo trip was actually today! I had got the dates wrong. So the dilemma is solved and I can safely do the editing. And I've saved whatever I would have spent getting there and buying drinks etc, which is no bad thing.
I feel as if I'm having another lightbulb moment, realising just how much our current way of life is not sustainable. I worked out that I need to find £50 a day between now and 31 January to pay my tax bill. Well this month I have saved just £86.
Not prioritising tax savings is stupid. Last year I paid £12,700 off my debts, when really I should have saved £7k for tax and just paid £5k off the debts. Come January I will be borrowing again to pay tax. And so it goes on.
OH is applying for more sessional lecturing work at the college where he's been working. I really hope he gets it. Last year he earned good money there in November and December, if he can do the same again that will be a huge help towards the tax bill.Total debt: 1 January 2007 £[strike]49,387.79[/strike] 1 January 2012 £[STRIKE]19,312.85[/STRIKE] 1 August 2012 £11,517.620 -
Hi Seaxwyn....I know where you are coming from with the tax thing.I'm the same and pay loads off the debt and forget to put the tax away.I really should do that before anything else and am really going to make an effort to do that.
Hope your OH gets that work and then at least that helps you.Sorry to hear that you missed out on the trip but as you say you didn't end up spending money.0 -
Oh the zoo trip! Sorry it was today... but you sound like you've been having a lightbulb moment of your own in relation to the tax. Well done anyway on paying off almost £13k last year!2023: the year I get to buy a car0

Ah well, the zoo trip was obviously just not meant to be!
At least you don't have to make the decision now, and can get on with earning lots of lovely money courtesy of Bolivian Rainforests.....
I think that when the journey is as long as ours is (debtwise) we have several lightbulb moments......we get stale, we get new ideas, we get new terrifying moments, but they all help us get to where we want to be ultimately. I would guess that for very very few longhaulers is there one LBM and the rest is plain sailing.
I know myself that I have had several flickers, and some outright flashes of light, but amongst the way there have also been a few power cutsSuccessful women can still have their feet on the ground.
