17 year old pregnant

Hi i am asking on behalf of a friend.

She has just found out her 17 yr old daughter is pregnant (daughter is keeping baby) she does not get any child benefit or tax credits for her and is wondering what her daughters options are. any advice would be appreciated as she can only just afford to pay the bills as it is.

TIA

Who do you want the advice for, your friend or your friend's daughter?

Baby isn't even past termination stage it seems and your thinking about what benefits you can get.

    Shocking.

Some people as usual are very harsh. I don't know the answers but I would think she would be entitled to child benefit and doubtless there are others. someone else will be along no doubt who knows better than me. My best wishes to all concerned.

Well maybe the guy should put something on the end of it, (as jeremy kyle says), Why have a baby if you simple cant afford it and being so young.

I know that and so does my friend but what is done is done.

I have not come on here asking for advice for people to have a go, i have come on to ask for advice for a friend that works very hard and does not know how she is going to manage to support daughter and grandchild when it is born.

She can claim Income Support in the latter part of the pregnancy (I can never remember correctly but I think it's around 29 weeks...?)

Once the baby is here, she could continue to claim IS and also Child Tax Credit and Child Benefit.

Child maintenance from the father will be on top of the above.

There is also the Surestart Maternity Grant for baby items - it was £500 and has been restricted to the first child only, but I think the amount has stayed the same. She can claim up to 3 months after the baby is born.

She can't claim housing benefit if living with a relative, but would be able to pay her mum living costs from these benefits as that is what they are intended for.

If she goes back into education, I believe there is a benefit that would help with that.

If she goes to work, she should get help with childcare costs.

This is all assuming the father is not going to be around, of course.
