  • I was swollen and sore down there for about the last three months of pregnancy due to thrush. They did give me treatment but it never got rid of it (although it did reduce the symptons a bit) but then once Alice was born it just went away.

Natasha only weighs 14lb 4oz, the HV keeps commenting on it, but honestly, she is eating for England - she has 3 meals a day (plus 4 - 5 breastfeeds) and seems full by the end of them, plus rice cakes, cooked carrot sticks etc, but she is just soooo wriggly that she's burning it all off.
Snaggles, you might find these useful:

    http://www.kellymom.com/babyconcerns/growth/growthcharts.html
    http://www.who.int/childgrowth/standards/cht_wfa_girls_p_0_2.pdf
Breastfed babies usually gain less weight than bottle fed in the second six months. The charts used in the UK were made without distinguishing between methods of feeding and as most babies are bottle fed, they are skewed towards the growth pattern of bottle fed rather than breastfed.
EDIT: Your health visitor ought to know about these things.

Hi Ella, we don't mind at all!

I don't remember being swollen but would advise you to get it checked out. I know it's not nice having people looking at your lady bits, but, believe me, you will be completely used to it by the time baby arrives!

I had made OH promise not to go 'down there' during labour, but he ended up holding a torch (yes, a torch) for the lone MW at the birthing centre who wasn't sure whether my waters had broken. At one point she had to ask him to redirect it - turns out he was trying to get a better look himself!

Your midwife will be very sensitive to your concerns I'm sure and it's better to get it looked into just in case.

As for babies arriving early, apparently there is some evidence about late/early babies being passed down the maternal line, but nothing's set in stone. HTH?

Ok my lady bits look very very swollen, you could even say bulging

I'm impressed that you can see your lady bits at 33 weeks pregnant. Mine were a distant memory by that stage :rotfl:

I don't remember being swollen. I would swallow your embarrassment and ring the midwife for advice. I know it's awful being examined down there, but a quick few blushes will put your mind at rest.

I was hugely embarrassed when I had to have smears and examinations before I had a baby, but when you've been through labour and it feels like half the hospital have been in for a look, you do lose your inhibitions.
Here I go again on my own....
  • Thanks guys

It was fun and games trying to see them Becles!!

As soon as i woke up this morning it just didnt feel right and was a bit shocked by it to be honest. OH has been away for a few days but will be home tonight so i will let him have a look and then get it checked out - he thinks that because i have had such a hard pregnancy that the birth will be easy and i wont even know im in labour - if only!! :rotfl:

Certainly applies in my case: I was born at 37 weeks and both my boys at 38 weeks.

Good luck, Ella. :) I agree with others and would advise to get it checked out just in case.

And yes, once you've had a baby, you do lose all dignity when it comes to your bits. :rotfl: A smear test is a doddle these days.
  • Ok Ok, I'll try to do less, but you all know how it is. I like seeing updated pics too snaggles.

Sarah, welcome and Hi! Your baby sounds like he may have reflux. That was exactly how Jack was and I had him diagnosed about 4-5 weeks old. The doc prescribed gaviscon sachets which I put in his milk, it helped a bit but I found we had to do it with every bottle, not just the twice a day they first recommended. It can bung them up a bit so we offered him plain water and eventually put a little bit of prune juice (we called it poo juice) in his night bottle. This kept him from being bunged up. Another baby I know had the condition much worse and was on all sorts of medication under a paedatrician, but your GP would have to refer you if all else fails.

With regard to milk, we went through the whole chemist, Breastmilk, SMA, Cow and Gate, Comfort, Wysoy and by 11 weeks old the poor chap had drunk 7 different milks. Then I saw the most experienced HV in my area and she put him on Nutramigen combined with Gaviscon and we didn't look back, but his system I am sure had matured a bit by then. By the time he was 6 months old and sitting up it had improved and by 7 months we were off the gaviscon completely. By 8 months he had decided Nutramigen was truely awful and wasn't going to drink it anymore (I have to agree its foul) and we went onto Aptamil, which he loved with no further problems. Then I bought SMA progress 2 weeks before I weaned him onto cows milk, as it was on offer, he drank that too. So the long and short of it is don't be fobbed off, if you have a sensible HV or GP, they should be able to see that a 8 week old baby is uncomfortable and hopefullyl prescribe Gaviscon.

    HTH.

Google Infant reflux if you want more info.

Bailey - you were right I saw my doctor this morning and he thinks it is reflux as well. He has put Rowan on Nutramigen and Gaviscon - so hopefully it will sort him out. We had real trouble getting hold of the Nutramigen - ended up trying 4 chemists before finding one that stocks it.

  • Hi Everyone,

Sorry not been on for ages - had problems accessing old threads since the crash but they seem to have cleared.

I need to vent so I apologise.

I'm having real issues with my boss about returning to work, from all the info my Dad has gathered off the web she is trying to ride roughshod over my legal rights!

My job has been changed and relocated for no obvious reason with no contact to inform me of the changes and a written request for a reason has been ignored!

I had to contact her to arrange a meeting regarding my return to work!

I'm worried as I am will be continuing to breastfeed DD on my return so will need to express whilst I'm there - only truly private room is the toilet! (it has been suggested).

I have involved my union rep now, and Dad (he works there too) has said don't worry enjoy these last few weeks and I'll sort it out for you, but I can't help it - not much sleep the last few nights.

Dad has been speaking to the people I usually work with and they say that the changes aren't working letters are taking a month to be typed and sent out . When the are ready for signing they're full of errors and it's a nightmare to get them corrected - basically they're begging for me back :D. I would be so much happier too, as the office has a lock and although I share it it's known as my office so I can ask them to leave when I need to.

I have noticed that I'm trying to focus my worry elsewhere by becoming obsessive about pushchair research - I feel Katie needs a rear facing one as she keeps getting a sore eye in this cold weather (cold air being blown in her face sets it off), she has to have her raincover on at all times.

BTW I'm thinking of either the Quinny Buzz or ICandy Cherry - any opnions welcome.

    That's better, thanks for reading.

Sorry to hear of all your worries.

I do know that an employer legally has to provide somewhere private to express milk and it's not allowed to be the toilet. They also have to provide space in a fridge for you to keep the milk fresh.

Hope you get the rest sorted out soon. It's hard enough having to deal with leaving a baby while you work, without having all this to deal with too.

actually they don't have to provide a fridge by law, only by 'good practice', the law only says that an employer must provide a place for a breastfeeding mother to 'rest' and yes it's not allowed to be a toilet, you should be able to lie down, i had loads of problems when i went back to work and ended up giving up bf about 5 weeks after i went back.
when i went on maternity leave my employer deducted £236 out of my first paypacket for no reason, kennedy is now 13 1/2 months so 14 months ago and they have only decided today that the money was taken in error! i have been fighting for so long to get my money back, but maternity pay is done by HO and not instore and the two seem unable to talk to each other, i even threatened an industrial tribunal and they still didn't sort it.
also the red book weight charts. they are actually based on bottle fed cows! so they are not based on human babies, i wouldn't bother with it at all. i printed one off the internet from the WHO website that is based on bf babies and she was exactly on the 50th centile, whereas on the redbook one she was less than 25.
