What the hell is that rubbish supposed to mean?

Quite simple really. As explained by others with regard to Faster Payments which are supposed to be near real time.

It is of course pointless if their online banking system is riddled with problems (which they've acknowledged) and has been for the last two weeks I've tried accessing my account.

    So, wind your neck in.

I managed to log in for the first time - but did have a few glitches with page not found nonsense!

Have done my trial deposit from current account. Will check it arrives before moving a lump sum ;)

I just used the normal log in at top right. The high tech website then identifies you as a first timer :rotfl:

  • The Derbyshire, what a nightmare. I sent off cheque to open my account and received my User ID and activation key. That's the good news.
I enter my User ID and password and then enter my memorable info. Then I get 'we are unable to access your account, get in touch with customer service'. I do this, repeatedly, and get if you have lost your User ID, password and memorable info (which I haven't) get in touch with customer service, and so it goes on and I still can't access my account. Can't even withdraw my opening balance. Where's the steaming avatar gone?

  • Hi

I've just opened this account. I tested transferring £10 into it from my current account on Thursday and it still hasn't turned up.

I used the 00000000 account number with the sort code they gave (like it says here thederbyshire.co.uk/Savings/Savings.aspx), now its occurred to me that this number isn't unique - so how would my bank know where I want to transfer the money? Have I done the wrong thing in using 00000000 as the account number?

I know I should contact Derbyshire but I'll probably get a quicker response here!

    Thanks
  • The Derbyshire specifically tell you to put the full Derbyshire account number as the reference in your transfer details.
The 0000000 account number is a holding/collections account with NatWest who are acting as their bankers.

So everyone payment's go into the NatWest collections account and are then allocated to the correct account within the derbyshire by the account number in the "reference" field of the payment details

I was a tad dubious about using the 00000000 a/c. number so I queried it with my bankers. The man looked in his book and said, "It's O.K., it's a Natwest a/c."
I shall test this on Monday when I make a transfer.

    Yes, 00000000 is correct.

I remember a couple of years ago trying to make a transfer from Egg. Their system refused to accept this as a valid account number - even a manual override attempt failed. Egg seemed unconcerned by this failure and suggested transferring via another account, apparently unaware of/unconcerned by the lost interest problem. The Derbyshire came up trumps by supplying an alternative account number.
  • Quite a lot of building societies use this system.
Principality use a Barclays account for the collections account.
Again the account number in the reference field indicates which account within Principality it should go to.

Given that a change in the number quoted in the reference field would divert the money to a totally different account within the building society, you'll all now see the reason why banks will not allow you to change the reference in any stored payment details set up in online banking without treating it as a complete new payment mandate with all the security authorisation stuff that goes with it.

This of course is highly annoying if you want to make several payments from your bank account to another person and "simply" change the reference in each one so both ends can ident which payment is for what in their statement. However this could only be done by setting up a new payment details for each case.
