I've just seen this. I never realised that tube drivers earned so much! And now they're getting a 5% pay rise.

Tube drivers have a very responsible job and many will unfortunately have to deal with people throwing themselves under the train or the risk of that.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

Many, many, many thanks and a multitude of non food poker winning hands to kidcat, kittie, grandma247, ginnyknit ( I hope your OH is feeling better), HariboJunkie, Hobsons Choice (Thanks for the offer), Suki1964, Mrs Chip, katieowl, Pink-winged, shegar, NualaBuala, Becky 2 (Good luck with the job hunt) and JIL.
Thank you for sharing your point of view Onionbreath. I gave her the money as I know that internet grocery shopping around here needs at least 36 hours lead time to get a delivery slot.
Thankfully my neighbour is ok about his van and has told me not to worry about it. So I'll bake him a cake and one for Wayne for helping me this morning. DH has been cheering me up and was kind enough to tell me that if I wasn't so kind I wouldn't be the person he fell in love with. I know, I know soppy or what. I've managed to eat and will take some Kalms in a while.
Fingers crossed I will get my money back as I'm sure she will hope to borrow more in the future.
A neighbour gave me some cooking apples earlier, so they have been cooked down with a mango that was lurking in the fruit bowl/tupperware box. So that will get bagged up and put into the freezer for future crumbles.
I'm on day 3 of no puddings/treats/chocolate. Today has tempted me to raid the biscuit tin, but I've resisted so far.
Here's hoping for a better and less stressful tomorrow for everyone.

I understand that, but nurses get 20 odd grand a year less and they're the ones saving lives and have to deal with people in all sorts of messes from various accidents etc, daily. Not *might have to*.

SDG, good on you and there's nothing wrong in being soppy. In fact, soppy is good! You've got a good man there!

Aww SDG, your hubby sounds lovely, what a sweetie-pie. :D It sounds like you are very well-matched as you are so kind and he is a softie. :D

Broke my resolution of not spending anything at work this term - 10p on a paper cup full of hot water. Last of the big spenders, me. I am based at two different sites on Mondays and can't get home for lunch, so I pack a flask in the morning and take a teabag and soya milk with me for the afternoon. I could pack a plastic mug, but since I have my lunch, fruit, a flask, a water bottle, a netbook, extension lead, power cable, waterproofs and a kind of table fan gizmo thing for keeping the netbook cool, all packed into a cycle pannier, a mug would be just one thing too many. I'm dreading it when it gets cold and I have a buff, scarf, gloves, bike helmet and winter coat to lug round with me too. It'll look like I'm moving house!

Still, 10p per week, I suppose that's not bad ..... plus of course there's the free exercise of 8 miles of cycling every day.

FTM have you tried contacting the British Heart Foundation? They might be able to give you more information about your grandson's heart murmur.

Hugs to those that need them. I'm off to bed as I've been up since six. Sweet dreams!

    Still trying to be frugal...
  • things just aren't getting any better for some folks on here so I think it is big hugs all round (and maybe some chocolate too - that always seems to help:))

SDG - it's easy to be wiser after the event but you're heart was clearly in the right place and not many of us can claim to feel that way all of the time.

Becky - all I can say is good luck and keep thinking positively.

FTM - one of my good friends was diagnosed with a heart murmur in her late teens. It hasn't stopped her running marathons and jumping from aeroplanes (silly woman:D) so hopefully things will work out just fine for your GS.

HariboJunkie - I am the kiss of death to washing machines. I'm on number 7 in 22 years of marriage. Only once have I taken the extended warranty and that one blew up within a week of it expiring. I just buy the cheapest one I can get now and when it goes bang we just replace it (unless it's something simple to fix)

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see snow this week - I have a dwarf azalea which is so thoroughly confused by the weather it has started to flower for the second time this year. I shouldn't be pleased however it's nice to see some colour in the garden at this time of year.

I have a success story - my carrots which I planted in a tub were looking quite healthy so I pulled up 2 earlier tonight. they aren't huge but they are perfect and they smell like carrots should. I know that sounds silly but I haven't had a carrot which smelt of anything for ages.
I was so excited I washed one under the outdoor tap and promptly ate it. I'll have to behave better with the others and share them with hubby but I was so excited - and it was so tasty.

I planted purple sprouting broccoli before I went on holiday and it seems to be doing ok but I'll have to investigate how it should look and what I need to do and when.

I've ordered the bread maker so will update you when it arrives and bore you to tears with tales of bread (and jam hopefully).

Has anyone heard from JackieGlasgow recently - I know her BIL was ill - hope things are ok? Also SammyKaye hasn't been around for a while. She had a nice new house to settle into so I'm sure she has lots to do.

SDG, your husband sounds really supportive and absolutely wonderful.
scottishminnie, they don't make washing machines like they used to, so it's probably not your fault that you've had problems with them. I've only ever had two washing machines...the first one was a wedding present. It lasted for just over 24 years and the salesman (who was probably less than 24 years old himself) laughed at me when he asked how old the last machine was. I'm almost scared to say that the second one is still going strong in case it goes 'bang' in the morning. :)

I've had a lovely evening. DD is home after a fortnight away and we spent a couple of hours curled up on the sofa having a good old natter. Up early for work tomorrow and I have a whole month's paperwork to do....why oh why do I always leave it until the last minute. :o

FTM - re heart murmur: my grandma was told she had a heart murmur - they found it when she broke her femur & had to have an operation at age 99, but didnt tell her until the following year when she had a knee replacement (yes, at the age of 100). That was 2 years ago - and she is still going (relatively) strong!

I completely agree Onionbreath and hindsight is 20/20, but she lives on my street, I see her nearly every day and have never heard of any problems before this happened. So all I had to go on was the information she gave me, and I had no reason to question it. Now I know better and it won't happen again. It's in my nature to help if I can and I don't want that to change. It's one of my good points and goodness knows I need something to balance out the bad ones. I'm being friendly until I get my money back and then will cut her off.
    Thank you kittie
SDG, I'd have done the same thing (if I'd have had the money). It doesn't matter if it's a scam or not really, you did what you thought was good and charitable, which shows your character. Hopefully she will pay you back, I tend to find when I've done things for people it's about 50/50 whether they were trying it on, but it doesn't stop me doing it, because it's rewarding to help those who are genuine. Though not having much money means I tend to feed people or provide them with items we have and they need.
