Any suggestions how I can encourage Truffles (DS2's choice of name) to do this? She's been around since February and is much less shy now, but still very wary. Sat on OH's lap for a few seconds once, and that was it.

Little treats beside you, adding very gentle fusses and talking softly, reassuring slow blinks (cat kisses), looking away a lot so she doesn't feel she is the centre of attention. Introduce a cushion beside you for her to sit on - sooner or later she is likely to roll over and slide against you.

One of mine will happily fall asleep anywhere on me - it's actually taken 13 years to convince her that sleeping beside me is an equally valid place. One doesn't like laps enough to sleep on them, but since he got slimmer, he is more than happy to stand on my legs to get fuss/shout at me for food, but will sleep on my ribcage at night if I don't turn onto my side fast enough. And one - the rescued abused fluffbag - doesn't do my lap, but loves to be on a cushion beside me and getting lots of scratches - but will snuggle up to Minion like she's her mother.

Don't know where to start, as lots happened since my last post. OH is in hospital after a bleed in his head. I left the ward at 8pm last night and have found out that they moved him to a different one during the night, but can't find out how he is at the moment. I know they're really busy and can't always answer the phone, but visiting is not until much later.

I do hope that he has a speedy recovery and you get more lay ins throughout the school holidays without so much worry.

Had a lay in, fed cats, relandscaped Morris and the Munchers' living quarters (bit worried about one Danio that looks unhappy, but did a massive water change/treat/filter clean/medication/replant and hoping for the best there. Going to starve them to see if that helps it perk up a bit. If not, going to have to euthanise it tomorrow in a glass of iced water :()

Should be doing something practical. I might do some gardening if I can be bothered, but at the moment I am debating whether to wait for food until the Japanese takeaway opens up.

    Mmmmmm. Tempura.
    Mmmmmm. Chicken yakitori.
    Mmmmmm. Salmon teriyaki bento.

wwell having listed all my stuff on e bay I have then frittered away time answering threads and playing scrabble.

AFis here though (so THAT'S my excuse)

anyway going to get the LAST room that needs to be cleaned and in order and this will, hopefully, motivat eme to do the million and one things I have to do

I have a bag of books my mum has liberated from a friend including my new fave Kathy Reichs, a Bill Bryson (never read any) so plenty of distractions:o

Flopped in here and decided I was only going to skim the latest page and then Go Get On And Do Something - only to see MrsChaos' news - so sorry to hear that - dosn't sound good - do get in touch if you need - will check in case you do.

And, in an effort to avoid my chaos - no experience with cats, but my experience with (rescue) dogs is that it takes time for them to come for fuss - and, on the whole, needs to be on their terms - and I think cats are even more independently minded than dogs! One of mine starts to come and snuggle up to me, big time, probably 6-12 months after he came to live here - and it was probably 2 years before he really laid his head on my lap. The other one will probably never be really affectionate - she just wants to be a dog - definitely wants to be with us, but would rather be being asked to 'do' things, than to be fussed and petted.

OK. I now really have to go off and do a flying HHC. Just need to reduce the outward chaos to things at least being in the right places.

well I have washed up and done the ironing. There is some laundry in the basket - but not much. Possibly enough for a half-load...other than that it's all washed, dried and ironed:D

I have also glued one of the DR vertical bind slats back - the plastic weight pocket (technical term?) had come undone. Not a big job, I know.

Just need to find the motivation to dust and vacuum the DR now!
