Hi, this is the Daily Thread for Friday 22nd July. This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred.

When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” type start does just as well.

Morning All,

Sooper dooper early one from me today - have been up since 3:30  a v. drunk OH got a taxi home with no money to pay for the fare  so i had to bail him out (with his own money mind!) Then he was fannying around being a drunken fool when we finally got into bed I was wide awake... He's got work at 9am so will need to drop him off and there is nothing worse than getting into a deep sleep and then having to get out of bed, so thought i'd get ahead and nap this afternoon if i need it.

WM is on - have realised someone put a pre wash setting on it (wondered why it took hours to finish a wash :rotfl:)
Kitchen and bathroom are cleaned, dry clothes have been put away and Council tax has been paid. (i know it's due the 1st of the month, but as long as we pay it they don't mind - it's what we've done for the last 3 years)

I need to do a food shop today - with about £20 instead of £40 due to the taxi bill!! We only need 3 evening meals and lunch box bits - i'm making pasties today and will do some cookies/cakes or maybe cereal bars for OH's lunch, so it's stuff to put in sarnies and drinks and then 3 meals to worry about. I went to morrisons yesterday, think i will try in there or aldi am off to hunt cheap cut recipes in a while.

Have a lovely day all (hope you got more kip than me :rotfl:)

Good morning Bramble and all to follow.
Sounds like you are having a time of it at the moment Bramble. Hope you have a peaceful day and grab a rest later if you need it. x

Can't believe what has happened in Norway. How horrific. Those poor, poor families who sent their youngsters of to an activity camp. My DGS1 was in Wales last month at an outward bound camp with his school. The idea that some madman would do such a thing is unthinkable. Thoughts and prayers to all caught up in this carnage.

But back to my happily uneventful, rather boring life...
Well it didn't half rain here last night. But it was rather sociable rain. I got 2 loads of washing dry. DD1 and family had a great picnic lunch with DGS2s friends and families. DH and I were able to walk to the restaurant to meet up with DD1 and the gang. Weather was very pleasant - warm with a little wind and the sun shining gently. Then, at bed time, woooomph - the heavens opened. The potatoes will love it and the garlic and onions are doing well. The outside tomatoes are now also turning red:) So the reducing and freezing will be starting very soon. Good job it doesn't happen until the school holidays start:)

Hoping to have DS & family arriving to stay for the weekend. Think we will have pork with cream and mushrooms for dinner with hg potatoes. Not sure who will eat here, but it will probably be all 12 of us to cater for. Think at least 6 of us will sit and eat together, possibly even 7 or 8. Just have to be flexible and feed whoever is here and save meals for the others.

Happy Saturday folks. Hugs to all who need or want them.
    Cheers m'dears, Silver x

Morning everyone. Gosh, Bramble that was a rude awakening you had, hope it doesn't happen too often!

Am sitting in bed in Glasgow :j just about to head for the shower. I am just visiting my folks before going to South Africa on Tuesday for a two week business trip. Got mega organisational packing to do so I can feel a list or two coming on. :j

As I've been away so much recently there has been plenty of OS (for me) with OH foraging in the freezer and probably the local pizza parlour. He's happiest that way as he doesn't really have much interest in food and eats what's available. Odd....

Just been reading online about the awful news in Norway. I had the radio on most of the night and each time I woke up the total of dead had risen, think it's now at 87. It's horrible.

Hey ho, must get these legs out of this oh-so-comfortable bed and get set for the day. I need to get home so will be leaving before the first football match of the SPL starts.

Hope everyone is OK - I do try to read each day but not always successfully.

    morning all

just about to go to work but will nip to post office to pick up a parcel on my way

Harry potter was fab yesterday it wasnt as scary as i thought it would be definitly worth watching. the scariest bit was the adverts before when a football was kicked and in 3D it shot straight at me and i tried to bat it away with my hands , much to the embarrasment of the DD's :o

also had a bur@er k!ng meal before - not had one for years anyway coudnt eat a thing for the rest of the night - it sat very heavily in my tum :(

sun is shining so hopefully will get some washing done when i get back

DH is coming back from france tomorrow, will be nice to see him , although the house has stayed tidy whilst he has been away lol

have a good day eveyone xx

Morning all - up at 5.30 this morning - mainly because I went upstairs last night at 6.30 to put some clothes away, sat on the bed for a minute and that was it! Off to Wallington Hall near Morpeth with my boy and a friend today for a picnic and a play, so am hoping the weather report is correct for a dry day. bramble1 - hopefully the OH will be in 'sorry mode' for a bit? When mine is in 'sorry mode' loads of DIY jobs that have been put off get done! Here's hoping.

sistercas - love your 3D reaction - when my 26 yr old DD was eight I took her to see Free Willy - she refused to walk out with me after because I was sobbing with the emotion of it all - you have to realise that I cry at a sentimental advert! She now says there is nothing anyone can do to embarrass her - her parents' embarrassing behaviour over the years has vaccinated her for life!

    Morning All!
Been MIA this week with cousins from Oz here. having a really great time catching up with all the family news. DS came up to meet them yesterday. His MRI scan has shown the aneurism has grown in the last month - appt on Wed to "discuss the options". Anyone any idea what these might be? Trying not to worry, but not easy!
have been up early every day to keep all the hardfloors downstairs swept and washed - very necessary with visitors and our two dogs!! Not sure what's on the cards today - I know we've booked another pub meal this evening. Bread and water for a while next week for DH and me I think!! never mind, they're his only family left now and it's been a real joy to spend time with them.
Must go check the WM has finished and hang out the washing. Not heard the news for a few days - I clearly need to catch up by the sound of the earlier posts. need to remember an anniversary card for OH - we chalk up 41 years on Monday!!
Whatever you do today, take care. ((HUGS)) to all in need of them.
    Bye now!

    Think twice before spending anything!

    Morning

What a beautiful morning it is too! It's clearly been raining but fresh and sunny at the moment. I went for an early morning toddle and treated myself to a newspaper.

Saturday morning always used to be hot croissants from the bakery, juice, fresh coffee and newspapers however that has all had to stop. Very occasionally I treat myself to a weekend newspaper. Yes, I know I can get the news online but there is something about pouring over a paper snd the smell of it. It's sat here beside me and my cafetiere on the bench in the garden....... and the anticipation....

Speaking of which, I too am struggling to understand the mentality of the idiot who murdered all of those youngsters in Oslo or the one who set the bomb. It's normally such a peaceful country.

Waiting on a Sainsbugs delivery before loading the crockpot with bolognaise. I am also going to bake some bread and make a gooseberry crumble (free berries from a friend) and some cookies (stem ginger and oatmeal/raisin) while the oven is on.

After that I have loads of work to catch up on.

    Have a lovely day.

    Good Morning all,
awful news from Norway, those poor parents, what they will go through over the next few months doesn't bear thinking about.
I had ,for me anyway, an early night around 10 ish but although I was tired and went off to sleep I kept waking up every few hours I gave up at 6.00 and got up and made some tea. I think it will be a gentle pottering sort of day today I have my sitting room nets to put through a wash this morning but thats about all. This afternoon I will pop up to my hairdressers for a trim and then home for feet up and some knitting.May even read the back of my eyelids for awhile :):)

I had to go to the opticians yesterday and came out £269 lighter than I went in:eek::eek:but as I haven't had to change my glasses for 5 years I suppose its not too bad ,just a bit of a shock at how much it costs now to even get some new specs. These had better last me a few years, the optician was very nice and did give me a reduction on the second spare pair though:j
Next week I start my full time care for the boys during the summer holidays We have a list of things they would like to do so I'm hoping for some nice weather Only three weeks tomorrow before we go on holiday and they still don't know yet that we are going .We never tell them until a week before to give them a suprise.Jack had his primary school leaving service yesterday and his brother Henry said he cried a bit. His teacher bought all the children little autograph books and the kids went round getting the teachers and their friends autographs. One teacher wrote in jacks book How she would miss his great big smile in the morning ( he is definitely a morning child as he is always happy first thing by bed time he gets a bit grumpy though )His youngest brother Mikey (7) takes awhile to wake up on a school day but week-ends and holidays he is up with the larks first thing .When we go away in a few weeks he is always first in my bed in the morning for a cuddle though which is lovely and he brings me in a glass of OJ which is even nicer.Right time I did some sorting out of my bills what gets paid this week and what doesn't :(.Have a great day everyone
    Cheers JackieO xx

Morning all, first day of the school holidays here - what a build up this week counting down the days until they could sleep in and how long did they sleep extra??? a whole 10 minutes!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm sure this'll change over the next few weeks.
Plans for today are to sort out more stuff for our car boot tomorrow that I am doing with DS's, forecast looks good over the next 5 days or so, I am hoping to get into the garden and tidy up the veg a bit.
Wash the old school uniform and anything decent will go to the CS, and anything not good enough I will use to stuff the draught excluders I need to make ready for the winter.

Well the bonus with being up so early is i'm super productive as OH/BIL aren't here to distract me!

2nd cycle is just finishing in the WM - i've made the rough puff pastry AND the pasties (just need to pop them in the oven) i did get bored half way through rolling the pasty (it hurt my hands) so only did 3 instead of 4 :o

Sistercas - I had half a BK burger yesterday and i've not felt right since! nothing beats HM burgers.

Thinking of going to my mums to raid her Harry potter dvds and have a catch up on them all today.

Still can't get over what's happened in Oslo, I think of Norway as my home country and am devastated over this. I've been trying to convince OH for years to go there for holidays (mainly the cost is off putting to him!) It's such a beautiful place and the people are so lovely and genuine - everywhere has such a community atmosphere.

Done my shopping list too - have written the price of everything in sainsbobs and if morrisons isn't cheaper i can stop there on the way back for the other bits as they are on the same road. Going to attempt twinks hobnobs today for the first time!

OH is still asleep, I think working with his hangover may be punishment enough, but we shall see how nice i am feeling later;);)

    Morning all

Didn't post yesterday as I was at Legoland. Had a good time with DS but even with a childfree voucher and taking food and drink I spent a fortune, mind you I did get a quebot for us which was great as I didn't queue for anything the whole day. Guess DS is getting a bit old for Legoland and we really ought to move up to Chessington but he wanted to go there.

When I got home found I had a huge flood in my hallway where my toilet has leaked . Took me ages trying to sort it out and couldn't even turn the stopcock off as it was jammed. Have managed to shift it this morning with a hammer and some GT55, but it's still been dripping all night. Hopefully one of my neighbours will be able to help with it later or at least recommend a plumber who won't rip me off!

Really can't understand the mentality of someone who will hurt others as they have in Norway. My thoughts go out to the people there.

Was hoping to go out today as I'm child-free tonight but doesn't look like that will be happening. Will have to do a very cheap shop at some point.

Have a good day all and big hugs to anyone who needs one.
