Nothing French, despite the fact that I really like the look of certain French cars - Pug 406 Pininfarina coupe, Citroen C6, or Italian - Alfa GTV Coupe (mid nineties), and you will not get the good ones under £500.
I reckon out of all those, The Beemer 5 series is the sleeper (I have had three), they do everything well, and certain engines are bulletproof. They will get you to the South of Italy, via France, Germany and Switzerland, and back, without any problems, and you will feel comfortable and relaxed.

Good ideas. Whilst trawling autotrader I came across this mx5 for £695-

I'm fed up with car delaers, looking for a new (2nd hand) car. I've seen a couple advertised that have a certain amount of mileage on the advert and described as in good nick. When i get there the first one had 89k instead of 81k and had its paintwork touched up in several places with graphite grey paint (car is silver).

Knowing there was another similar car on autotrader for similar money i turns this car down to go look at the other. This was was desribed as having 78k and in good nick with maybe one or two small dents. When i got there it had had more hits than elvis and the mileage was 98k. funnily enough i didn't buy it!

There is another car i want to see today but i'll be calling the dealer before i set off and asking him categorically what the mileage is and what the bodywork is like. If i get there and it turns out to be a nail i think i'll turn into michael douglas from the film "Falling Down"

I'm not expecting perfection as i know for £2k the car will have some age related marks but i swear some dealers deliberately mis-describe them to get you down to their crappy sales yard.

thing is if the scratch hadnt been touched in you get people in shorts rubbing the scratches for 10 minutes probably thinking it will make it better and go away
in relation to dents, ive tried putting in adverts small dent in passenger door and trust me you get every fool in the universe on the phone going on and on about how big is it will it push out can you see it from the moon etc,now trust me here again if the dent could be knocked out cheaply it would have been but we are talking banger money here so i too dont bother advertising with small dents included anymore, theres those that accept dents on old cheap xcars and theres those that seek perfection but live in never never laarnd

no offence blue_haddock its just the way it is
