But you can't have the best of both worlds, this is a smartphone and they are not. Simple.

the w950 is a smartphone, with touchscreen etc

OK well maybe not the W950, but I get quite worked up when people compare phones like 6230, k750i etc with the N-series phones.

You simply cannot compare them they are in two different leagues!

    Thats a firmware issue.

Was it real quick to begin with? If not then it's firmware else it's probably the gazillions of programs you've got installed.
  • I am sure that the N95 will be a good phone when everything works as it should do. However, wait and see how buggy it is with its original firmware.

I own a N73 on 3UK and I am still waiting for the release of a firmware update...

...I am unable to use Bluetooth properly as the phone keeps losing the connection. There are issues with memory cards and other problems due to the original firmware. This is nothing to do with the Network additional software as generic SIM Free owners and those on all the Networks had/have the same problems. A firmware update was released but O2 and 3UK cannot get it as they have a different product code. I think Vodaphone users were lucky that they had one of the product codes that Generic owners in the UK must have as they were able to get the update.

If you look on the Nokia Discussions board you will see that there are a lot of problems due to firmware version. These occur with other phones too.

If the original firmware version has correct code and the capabilities of the phone work fine then great go ahead and get one. Otherwise be more hesitant and wait for the user reviews.

I got the N73 as I saw that it could be used with Navicore GPS SatNav software. I thought purchasing the two of these would stop me from having to carry around a separate SATNAV device. If only I had read about the issues with the N73 first. I have no idea when a firmware update will be released and 3UK have stated that they cannot guarantee that their new X-Series firmware update will contain the Nokia fixes to the Bluetooth problem. 3UK have also stated that they (as well as other Network Operators) are not obliged to approve firmware updates.

So you see if the manufacturer's firmware has faults to start with, you get stuck in a rather sticky problem.

There are ways and means of getting the update but because these are not official they invalidate both warranties (Manufacturer + Operator).
  • Nokia will need to sort out the battery life on the N95 though if it is to be a success. I have an N80 which I love but the battery life is shocking. I charge it every night and some days don't even use it.

The N95 is more powerful and will probably be more power hungry.

you can change the product code to a generic one using the usb cable given with your phone update the firmware to generic and then change it back.
  • The trouble with all these phones basically is that it boils down to the firmware. Nokia are usually pretty quick to update the basic unbranded firmware when a bug shows up but then it is up to the network to implement it with their branding and to be honest they are not that interested once you are using the phone.

The N73 is also fairly buggy with network branding (my brother in law has one on Orange and that is a nightmare) but I flashed one the other day for someone with the latest unbranded firmware and its now running perfectly.

I think the battery like will be a problem with the N95 though, especially with a built in GPS receiver.

they will no doubt include two!

But I mean I would rather carry an extra battery than a whole Navigation system so all in all it makes it worthwile!

Indeed .. I will be first in line when they release the phone.
All it is lacking that I can see is a decent flash like the K800i .. then it would be almost perfect for me.
