    To reduce hardware acceleration

Right click anywhere on desktop, select "properties" then "settings" then click the "advanced" button. Click the "troubleshooting" tab and reduce the slider down a notch and see if it helps..

Although if it is the same error as others are getting its a case of bad drivers..

Not attaching a scanner, don't have one, Are you doing anything else immediately before the laptop crashes ? Is anything else attached ?
not sure what a root kit is, so probably not. A hi-tech virus.
Been through the malware sticky. Did you find anything ?

Sorry but I'm not sure what you mean by "have you tried reducing hardware acceleration etc - ie differnt settings in the adapter's driver tabs/pages." Sorry I'm not very comp literate. See Scooters post - look for Troubleshoot - it may be on the "settings" tab, or not in W2K

I don't think think the laptop is overheating, it only ever crashes on start-up. Have you booted into safe Mode, does it still crash ?

Never use hibernate, and ran chdsk through.Meant repeat running untill no errors.

Earlier posters seemed to suggest RAM probs, what do you think? You ran Memtest and found no errors, so it looks like a driver error - go to windows update "Custom Mode " and look for Hardware updates on the left - after the checking

HTH .... If windows update has no newer drivers have a look here for updated firmware and BIOS http://search.hp.com/query.html?lang=eng&qp=url%3Awww.hp.com/hpinfo/&qt=compaq+presario+1500&la=en&hps=HP+Company+Information+Site&hpr=http%3A//www.hp.com/hpinfo/&I1.x=5&I1.y=2&ctry=us&hpn=Return+to+the+HP+Company+Information+Site&hpl=1&hpa=http%3A//www.hp.com/country/us/eng/contact.htm

    Technical info

    *** stop 0x00000050 (0xa3a171fo, 0x00000000, 0xf75b69cf, 0x00000000)

    *** nfts.sys - address f75b69cf base at f75b6000, date stamp 41107eea
Have you mistyped there, as I think it should be ntfs.sys? The fact that memory tests show no errors, and ntfs.sys is in the error message could mean that the hard drive is faulty or corrupted. Backup important documents to CD or USB memory stick etc. in case the drive dies completely.

I'm not ruling out a problem with the memory though. Did you run thorough memory tests, multiple passes? Are you able to remove one of the RAM modules at a time and see if the problem still arises?

Did you search for Drwtsn32.log files? If there are none, look for .dmp files in C:\Windows\Minidump.

Also, repeat chkdsk c: /f /r until it shows no errors or warnings.

Done, not sure if it has done anything though, the problem doesn't occur each time I start up.

What do you mean by the same errors as others bit?

I think I may have more than one problem and I can't seem to shake the nagging suspicion that my sagem modem is to blame for some of this.

Ok yeah I think it was a typo, and should have been as you say.

I've run chkdsk through and it shows no more errors or warnings, and I've also run numerous passes on the mem test, though I'll probably leave it testing all night now.

I found the following file in c:\windows\minidump Mini010307-01.dmp but I can't seem to figure out how to use it with dr watson.

If I wasn't so skint I think I'd of just bought a new bloody laptop by now!

    .

The error you are describing has been experienced by a lot of people with the same graphics card... It has been resolved by driver updates and can be brought on by installing types of software like JAVA or flash software.

How could I get the graphics card driver updated, I've checked windows update for updates and there are none left?
